OMAHA, Neb. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in its BIG EAST Conference regular season finale on Sunday losing 95-78 at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Nebraska to the Creighton University Bluejays. With the loss, the Hoyas complete the regular season with a mark of 5-24 overall and 2-16 in league play.
How it Happened
- Creighton (19-10, 11-7 BIG EAST) jumped out to a lead, but the Hoyas came back as a jumper banked in by graduate student Brianna Jones made it 10-7 midway through the first.
- Georgetown cut it to four at 15-11 on a pair of free throws from sophomore Tayanna Jones, but Creighton gained the momentum late in the quarter to make it 25-14 at the end of the first period.
- Senior Marvellous Osagie-Erese made back-to-back layups to begin the second half, but the Bluejays always had an answer on the other end building the lead to 12 and forcing a Hoya timeout.
- Senior Anita Kelava and Osagie-Erese were both hot in the second quarter on offense, however, defensive stops were few and far between as Creighton continued to build the lead despite GU's scoring. At the break, the Hoyas trailed 49-35 on a last second CU 3-pointer.
- The Hoyas continued to score in the second half, but struggled on defense.
- Osagie-Erese was a force on both ends forcing turnovers and scoring, but her spark was not enough to slow the potent Bluejay offense. At the end of the third, the Hoyas trailed 73-52.
- Despite the effort and a big push from graduate student Taylor Barnes, the Hoyas were never able to chip away at the lead eventually falling 95-78.
Of Note
- Barnes led the way with 24 points, while Osagie-Erese had a solid performance with a career-high 17 points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds.
- Kelava managed 16 points to round out the Hoyas in double figures, and sophomore Cassandra Gordon had a team-high eight rebounds along with five points.
- Georgetown shot 53 percent from the field hitting 30-of-57 shots, while the Bluejays managed 55 percent hitting 35-of-64.
