WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football program held its annual awards banquet on Monday evening, as the team, coaches and support staff met via Zoom to celebrate the 2019 season and recognize the graduating Class of 2020. The Blue & Gray handed out 13 awards, honoring 21 student-athletes and support staff members.
Wes Bowers – No. 35 Joe Eacobacci Representative
- Bowers will don the No. 35 Joe Eacobacci Memorial Jersey for a second-straight year.
- He becomes just the third player since the jersey's inception in 2003 to wear it for two years.
- Bowers ranked fifth on the GU defense in 2019 ith 46 tackles, while also recording 4.0 TFL and 1.0 sacks.
Ahmad Wilson - John L. Hagerty Award for Outstanding Back
- Wilson was an All-Patriot League First Team selection, his third-straight year earning all-conference honors.
- He ranked second on the Hoyas with 62 tackles. He also had 3.0 TFL, a forced fumble and an INT.
- The junior had a career-high 12 tackles against Colgate, earning Patriot League Honorable Mention honors.
Ryan Jelinek / Duval Paul – George A Murtaugh Award for Outstanding Lineman
- Jelinek earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors, becoming the first Hoya offensive lineman to garner all-conference recognition since 2015 (Kevin Liddy).
- He led GU's offensive line that allowed a league-low 19 sacks and led the Patriot League in rushing offense (147.4 ypg).
- Paul was an All-Patriot League First Team selection in 2019, his second-straight all-conference nod.
- He played and started in nine games this season, finishing with 31 tackles, 3.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks.
Brad Hurst / Owen Kessler / Isaac Schley – Jeremiah Minihan Coach's Award
- Hurst capped his GU career with an All-Patriot League Second Team selection after averaging 40.7 yards on 51 punts.
- He had 11 punts that traveled at least 50 yards and two punts over 70 yards, including a program-record 76-yard at Davidson.
- Kessler was a force on defense, recording 41 tackles and registering a team-high 8.0 TFL to go along with 2.5 sacks.
- He had a career-high 13 tackles in the season opener at Davidson.
- Schley was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, his first career postseason accolade.
- He tied for fourth on the team with nine receptions for 80 yards, with most of his catches coming on third down conversions.
Michael Dereus – Al Blozis Award for Most Valuable Player
- Dereus earned the All-Patriot League First Team honors, his second career all-conference selection.
- He finished the 2019 season with 41 receptions for a team-high 726 yards, averaging 17.7 yards per catch, and tied for the team lead with five touchdowns.
- The standout wide receiver signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens in April.
Leon Agee / Jack Tishman - John D. Burke Award for Outstanding Courage and Spirit
- Agee overcame an injury during his junior year to make his way back to start in GU's backfield as a senior.
- He finished with 27 tackles and an interception in nine games in 2019.
- Tishman had a season-ending surgery during his first preseason camp on the Hilltop, but has worked his way back and should be a significant contributor next season.
Neal Azar / Gunther Johnson - Mush Dubofsky Award for Outstanding Student-Athlete
- Azar played and started in all 11 games at center, helping lead an offensive line that allowed a league-low 19 sacks and led the Patriot League in rushing offense (147.4 ypg).
- The sophomore earned his second straight nod to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
- Johnson played in all 11 games as a senior, completing 124-of-208 passes for 1,550 yards and 12 touchdowns, the 10th most in Georgetown history.
- A three-time selection to the academic honor roll, Johnson was twice named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
Tiy Reed / Jonathan Saddler – The Belt Award
- A valuable member of the offensive scout team in practice, Reed returned four kickoffs for the Hoyas as a freshman, for an average of 17.25 yards per return.
- Saddler was on multiple special teams units, appearing in six games as a freshman and registering two tackles.
Palmer Nix – Special Teams Player of the Year Award
- Nix earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors for his play on multiple special teams units.
- He was a catalyst for Georgetown's success on special teams and was part of the regular rotation in the linebacker corps, registering 19 tackles, 2.0 TFL and a quarterback hurry
Khristian Tate - Iron Hoya Strength & Conditioning Award
- Limited to just six games as a senior because of injury, Tate earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors to become the first Hoya to be a four-time All-Patriot League selection.
- He registered 32 tackles, 4.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks in 2019.
- For his career, Tate totaled 177 tackles, 38.5 TFL and 19.0 sacks to rank among Georgetown's leaders.
Travis McCormack / Brittany Chwastiak – Ty Williams SISU Award
- McCormack has been the football program's head athletic trainer since the 2013 season.
- Chwastiak arrived on the Hilltop in the spring of 2019 and last season was her first assisting with the football team while also serving as the head athletic trainer softball program.
Mac Hollensteiner / Noah Carr - Robert Dahut Memorial Award for Most Improved
- Hollensteiner made nine appearances on GU's offensive line as a sophomore in 2019.
- Carr appeared in five games, playing mostly on special teams, and registered one tackle as a freshman.
Jimmy Lynn – 12th Man Award
- Lynn, a GU professor, local sports entrepreneur and philanthropist, has mentored dozens of Georgetown student-athletes, including many on the football team over the past several years.
- Many of his mentees are minority or first-generation college students.
