Georgetown Falls at Marquette

MILWAUKEE – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost to the Marquette Golden Eagles 72-40 on Wednesday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-4 both overall and in the BIG EAST -while the Golden Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
How it Happened
  • Marquette opened the game with an 8-0 run to force a Hoya timeout. Out of the break, GU tallied three quick points to get on the board.
  • The Hoyas would struggle to score for the rest of the stanza trailing 16-5 at the end of the first.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to overpower the Hoyas in the second quarter outscoring GU 20-8.
  • Junior Jillian Archer managed a pair of quick layups late in the period but MU went into the break leading 36-13.
  • Marquette began the second half with a trey, but GU answered with a 5-0 run led by back-to-back buckets from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris.
  • An 8-0 run midway through the quarter ballooned the lead as the Hoyas looked for a second wind.
  • The momentum came from the play in the paint as the Hoyas battled down low to make the score 55-26 at the end of the third.
  • Bolden-Morris began the final quarter with five quick points as the Blue & Gray looked for a comeback.
  • Marquette would have an answer with five of its own as the late surge never came and the Hoyas fell 72-40.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris was the lone Hoya in double figures with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and a block.
  • Archer added nine points and a squad-best seven boards in the game.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 35.7 percent (16-61) but allowed 50.0 percent (32-56) shooting by the Golden Eagles.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 41-30 had had 13 turnovers while forcing 12 for Marquette.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will stay on the road traveling to No. 3/5 UConn on Saturday for the first meeting since the Huskies rejoined the league. This morning, the league announced that the opening tip on Saturday has been changed to 2 p.m.  The contest will be broadcast live on SNY with the pregame show beginning at 1:30 p.m.
  • Also on Wednesday, the BIG EAST announced that Georgetown's game against Providence on February 6 set to be broadcast live on FS2 is slated for a 6 p.m. tip at McDonough Arena.

  • All Georgetown women's basketball home games are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. In accordance with Washington, D.C. regulations which limit the size of in-person gatherings, fans are regrettably not permitted to attend home games at this time.
