No. 3/5 UConn Bests Hoyas

STORRS, Conn. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the No. 3/5 University of Connecticut Huskies 72-41 on Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion in the teams' first BIG EAST Conference meeting since UConn rejoined the league. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-5 both overall and in the BIG EAST while the Huskies improve to 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "I'm really focused on us as a team, getting better. I can't worry about someone else, I have to worry about us and control the controllables. Is that what our defense should look like? Are we working together and playing together? Are we able to execute on offense? And one of the things that I know that we were able to do and we have been able to do a little bit is try to play a little bit better as a team defensively. The chemistry on the offensive end, it just hasn't been able to click because of lack of practice, but at the same time you got so many young players so I wanted them to come and see the banners I wanted them to see what it looks like it. They've grown up watching UConn win national championships. After the national championships, they wanted to play this game because they saw the best play the best. Now they're out here and they're living their dream. And when you're living your dream, don't look for autographs, you look to compete."
How it Happened
  • Freshman Yasmin Ott sank a triple to open the scoring, but the Huskies came right down with a trey to match.
  • The Hoyas stayed strong as junior Jillian Archer battled for the put back down low. However, a bucket on the other end sparked a 7-0 Huskie run.
  • Georgetown would continue to fight, but UConn slowly built the lead sitting ahead 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Hoyas were outscored 11-2 for the first five minutes of the second quarter as the press gave GU trouble. Georgetown would not score for the remainder of the half going into the break trailing 39-11.
  • The Blue & Gray opened the scoring in the second half on a jumper at the free throw line from sophomore Graceann Bennett.
  • Despite five quick points from the Huskies, GU answered as graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris beat the shot clock with a trey.
  • The Hoyas were rolling on offense as Archer managed the layup and Bennett added the 3-pointer. On the other end, UConn continued to score not allowing Georgetown to chip away at the lead.
  • Late in the third freshman Kelsey Ransom managed the steal resulting in an and-1, while Ott followed it up with a jumper.
  • The momentum wouldn't be enough, however, as GU still trailed 60-26 at the end of the third.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Hoyas staged a 10-0 run fueled by five points from Ott.
  • Georgetown played it to the end outscoring the Huskies 15-12 in the final stanza, but eventually fell 72-41.
Of Note
  • The freshman duo of Ransom and Ott were in double figures for the Hoyas managing 13 and 10, respectively.
  • Archer pulled down a team-high eight boards to go along with four points and freshman Jazmyn Harmon had three steals on the defensive end.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 29 percent (16-55) but allowed 44 percent (26-59) shooting by the Huskies.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 40-33 and had 22 turnovers while forcing 17 for UConn.
