OMAHA – The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a 65-57 decision to the Creighton University Bluejays on Saturday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena in a BIG EAST Conference game. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-7 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Bluejays moves to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
How it Happened
- Creighton scored nine quick points as the Blue & Gray trailed early. However, solid defense allowed the Hoyas to come right back as the posts were active in the lane and a bucket from junior Jillian Archer tied the game at 12.
- Freshman Kelsey Ransom sank a jumper in the final minute, but a last-second trey by Creighton gave the Bluejays the lead 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.
- Archer struck first in the second, and graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris added back-to-back shots to give the Blue & Gray the 20-16 advantage midway through.
- Free throws kept the Bluejays on top despite some big shots from Bolden-Morris. The Hoyas went into the break trailing 29-24.
- Creighton took the eight-point lead early in the second half forcing a Hoya timeout. Georgetown answered back cutting the lead to four 40-36 on a layup from sophomore Graceann Bennett.
- A late trey from the Bluejays made it a 10-point game 50-40 at the end of the third stanza.
- Ransom took over in the fourth scoring eight quick points for the Hoyas. However, Creighton had answers on the other end as GU fought to get within a possession.
- The freshman was all over the court scoring for the Hoyas and getting it done on defense.
- With 2:30 remaining in the contest, a layup from Archer made it a six-point deficit 58-52. Georgetown called timeout and had the Bluejays at the end of the shot clock. The desperation three went in and Creighton managed to regain the momentum to hold on for the 65-57 final.
Of Note
- Ransom led three Hoyas in double figures with a career-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, two steals and a block. She was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
- Bolden-Morris tallied managed 16 points and Archer had 11 points to go along with a squad-best nine boards as well as two steals.
- The Blue & Gray shot 43 percent (23-54) and allowed just 37 percent (21-57) shooting by the Bluejays.
- Georgetown was outrebounded 37-34 and had 13 turnovers while forcing 14 for Creighton.
- The contest was Creighton's first since January 3 after a pause for COVID-19 issues.
