Georgetown Edged by Marquette

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a tough one 55-48 to the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-8 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Golden Eagles moves to 12-2 overall and 9-1 in league play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "I was impressed by our fight and our will today, our will to compete and play. In our last game, we put people in bad situations that they couldn't defend. We tried to cut that out and to hold teams closer to 40 or 50 points. The type of offense that we're playing, we need to play around 50 in order to have a chance to win."
How it Happened
  • Junior Jillian Archer opened the scoring with a steal and layup on the other end as GU controlled it early.
  • A jumper from graduate student Taylor Baur off of an MU turnover would put Georgetown on top 9-4 midway through the stanza.
  • A late 8-1 run from the Golden Eagles made it 12-10 in favor of Marquette at the end of the first.
  • Freshman Kelsey Ransom tied the game at 14 on a bucket early in the second quarter and the Hoyas continued to battle keeping it within a possession.
  • At the 4:32 mark in the second, sophomore Graceann Bennett hit the layup to put GU back on top 18-16.
  • The lead swung back-and-forth until a 4-0 run in the final minutes of the half gave the Golden Eagles the 24-20 advantage at the break.
  • Marquette opened the second half with a 7-0 run. A layup from Archer stopped the run, but MU came right down and hit a 3-pointer to take the 34-22 lead.
  • Archer connected on a three-point play, and Baur got the offensive rebound and the layup to cut it to nine but Georgetown could not find a run to trail 42-32 at the end of the third period.
  • A putback from Bennett opened the fourth quarter and pulled Georgetown within eight.
  • Both teams battled as MU clung to the lead and Georgetown looked for opportunities to score.
  • Midway through the fourth, freshman Yasmin Ott beat her defender and drove left for the wide open layup to make it 50-44 and force and Marquette timeout.
  • Georgetown had some looks and the defense came up with stops, but it wasn't quite enough as the Hoyas fell 55-48.
Of Note
  • It was a balanced attack for the Hoyas with six of eight players scoring. Bennett led the way with 12 points as well as six rebounds.
  • Archer, Ransom and graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris all scored nine points apiece and Archer added eight boards along with three steals.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 44 percent (21-48) and allowed just 33 percent (21-63) shooting by the Golden Eagles.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 40-30 and had 16 turnovers while forcing 10 for Marquette.
  • The Hoyas celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday recognizing the female coaches, players and fans.
