Hoyas Win in BIG EAST Matchup Against Temple

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team secured a 1-0 win against Temple University at Cooper Field on Friday. The Hoyas earned their first BIG EAST win in the victory against the Owls and improved to 5-5 (1-2 BIG EAST) on the season.

From the Head Coach
"I feel great, the girls are getting better each week," said Christy Longacre. "As you could see today, Temple only got one corner off on us. The thing we focused on this week was not allowing them too easy access to our circle because they can be dynamic and strong on the ball. That was our focus and we executed, and we were able to finish when we needed to. You've got to love the freshman duo, an assist by Elena to another freshman, Sophie, inside. It's huge that we're having freshmen and sophomores step up into some big roles and having key moments for us in key wins."

How it Happened
·         The game was scoreless through the first half, and the teams combined for three total shots in the opening two periods.
·         Two Georgetown freshmen led the scoring play to begin the second half. Elena Leahy found her way inside the scoring circle and flung the ball across the center, finding Sophie Towne. Towne redirected the ball around the goalie to score her second goal of the season.
·         The Hoyas held onto the lead through the third quarter, only allowing Temple one shot in the period.
·         The Owls were unable to put together any threatening attacks against Georgetown's defense throughout the fourth quarter. Temple substituted in goalkeeper off the field with three minutes left in the game to try to even the score late in the final period, but the Hoyas played solid defense and held onto the win.

Of Note
·         The Hoyas only attempted one penalty corner in the game and two shots in the one-point victory.
·         Georgetown held Temple to five total shots and limited the Owls to one corner in the game.
·         Ciara Weets added four saves to her season total in the shutout win.
