Hoyas Beat La Salle at Home

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team came out victorious with a 3-1 win against La Salle University at Cooper Field on Sunday. The Hoyas have won three straight games and move to 6-5 (1-2 BIG EAST) on the season.

From the Sidelines
"All of our underclassmen are carrying a lot of weight for our team, and we're starting to see them put the stats up on the stat sheet," said assistant coach Liz Sack. "We're really proud of them for being able to finish today, that's been a huge focus for us. La Salle had some good opportunities today, so, moving forward, we have to zip up some things on defense to keep this momentum going."

How it Happened
·         After a scoreless first quarter, Georgetown came out of the gates attacking. The Hoyas scored 52 seconds into the second period after freshman Emma van der Veen recovered a rebound in the scoring circle. She was able to zip the ball past La Salle goalkeeper Ryan Curley for the first goal of the day.
·         The Hoyas went into the half with a 1-0 lead, but the Explorers were determined to answer. La Salle's Hannah Yanovich evened the score after receiving a pass from Tatum Johnson.
·         Georgetown would not let the third quarter end without taking back the lead. Sophomore Vivienne Trumpbour delivered a pass to freshman Sophie Towne in the middle of the circle, and Towne redirected the quick pass into the cage. The Hoyas led the Explorers 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
·         On a breakaway down the right side of the field, Trumpbour found van der Veen streaking towards the cage. Controlling the ball past a diving Curley, van der Veen shot and scored her second goal of the game with 6:26 left on the clock. The Hoyas held on to the 3-1 lead to end the game.

Of Note
·         The Hoyas attempted 11 penalty corners to La Salle's four. Georgetown also outshot La Salle 18-8 in the game.
·         Towne scored in her second-consecutive game for the Hoyas. Towne and van der Veen now have three goals each on the season.
·         Ciara Weets added five saves for the Hoyas, bringing her season total to 63 saves.
