WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season falling 3-0 to the No. 20/24 Providence College Friars at Chapey Field on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 10-1 on the year and 4-1 in the league, while the Friars improve to 8-1-3 and 4-0-2 in conference play for the year.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "All of the credit to Providence, they had a great crowd and atmosphere especially for a Wednesday night. They managed some fantastic strikes which really separated the game. There wasn't a whole lot between the two teams, but they took their chances incredibly well and we didn't. Providence is one of the best teams in the country that I've seen all year and they get all of the credit for their performance tonight."
How it Happened
- Georgetown was quiet in the first half with no chances at the net.
- On the defensive end, keeper Giannis Nikopolidis made a stop early, but allowed a Providence goal in the 26th minute when a free kick deflected off of two Hoya defenders before ricocheting into the net to make it 1-0.
- It would mark the first time this season that the Blue & Gray has trailed at the half.
- The Hoyas controlled the action early in the second half searching for the equalizer.
- That would never come as Providence added goals in the 61st and 69th minute to stop any chance at a comeback.
- Freshman Kieran Sargeant had the best chance of the night late, but it was saved as the Hoyas eventually fell 3-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown was outshot 10-7 and the Blue & Gray had just two shots on goal to the Friars' six.
- The Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks, while Providence took three in the match.
- Nikopolidis took the loss in the net with three saves to his credit.
- This was GU's first loss since May 10, 2021, and the Hoyas' first road loss since falling at Louisville on September 24, 2019.
