No. 1/1 Georgetown Downs Villanova on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Villanova University Wildcats 3-1 on Saturday at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas move to 11-1 on the year and 5-1 in the league, while the Wildcats move to 8-4-0 and 4-2-0 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Today was really important to see how we responded to losing. The reality is that this group doesn't lose often so it's interesting to see what happens when they do. Compounding that with conceding an early goal, I think they responded wonderfully and that really shows the character of this group."
How it Happened
  • Villanova struck in the sixth minute as Lyam Mackinnon charged at GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis and was able to dispossess and score to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown would answer right back in the 11th minute when sophomore Chris Hegardt struck a corner kick to the back post. Classmate Kenny Nielsen struck a hard ball that deflected and went into the net to tie it up.
  • Fifteen minutes later, it was the senior Zach Riviere on Senior Day taking a pass from junior Stefan Stojanovic in the middle of the box and firing from the right side to give the Hoyas the lead. That 2-1 score would stand at the break.
  • The game got physical throughout the second half as the cards were flying and the Wildcats ended up playing a man down due to a pair of yellows.
  • A hard tackle on Will Sands in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for Dante Polvara in the 73rd minute. Polvara's strike was saved, but the ball found the foot of a charging Stojanovic who one-timed it back in to make it 3-1 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Villanova 28-8 and the Blue & Gray had 10 shots on goal to the Wildcats' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 11 corner kicks, while Villanova took one in the match.
  • Nikopolidis was awarded the win in the net with one save to his credit.
