Rocha’s Overtime Goal Sends No. 2/2 Georgetown Past Red Storm

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team needed all 110 minutes to defeat the St. John's University Red Storm 2-1 in double overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas move to 12-1 on the year and 6-1 in the league, while the Red Storm moves to 8-4-2 and 3-2-2 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I'm really proud of this result because of how hard the game is when you play St. John's. This is one of the better St. John's teams we've seen in recent years and they made it really hard and they scored they scored a great goal exactly how they score goals. But I thought the guys responded really well and, fortunately, lady luck was on our side with the deflected goal. This is the nature of every game in the BIG EAST and I'm just glad we came away with the three points."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown had some early success as senior captain Sean Zawadzki sent it to sophomore Kyle Linhares on the right side. He took a touch and centered it to junior Stefan Stojanovic who buried it in the second minute to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas would had chances, but did not look exceptionally dangerous for the rest of the half as SJU looked to equalize. The teams would go into the break with the Blue & Gray leading 1-0.
  • It was the Red Storm looking strong early in the second period as Brandon Knapp scored in the 49th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Late in regulation, Stojanovic would have a perfect chance clang off of the crossbar as the teams stayed tied at one through 90 minutes of action.
  • Georgetown had three quick chances to start the first overtime, but that would be the only looks in the first 10 minutes.
  • In the second overtime, it was St. John's with the early opportunity on a free kick but the GU defense stood strong and cleared the ball. The Blue & Gray had a final free kick sent to the back post, but junior Dante Polvara could not center it for the shot.
  • In the final minute, St. John's had a shot that was saved by GU keeper Ethan Koehler. The Hoyas came down with one more opportunity. Sophomore Marlon Tabora passed it to freshman Kieran Sargeant. He found junior Aidan Rocha in the middle of the box. The shot was on target, but deflected off of a Red Storm defender and into the net to give GU the victory with just 38 seconds left in overtime.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot St. John's 20-9 and the Blue & Gray had six shots on goal to the Red Storm's five.
  • The Hoyas were awarded three corner kicks, while St. John's took one in the match.
  • Koehler was awarded the win in the net with four saves to his credit.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will head out on the road for a midweek contest at Xavier on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on Flo Sports and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
