Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1/1 Hoyas Defeat DePaul 3-1

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the DePaul Blue Demons 31 at Shaw Field on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-0 on the year and 2-0 in the league, while the Blue Demons drop to 5-4-0 and 1-1-0 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "DePaul is a really organized team it wasn't a mystery to us how they were going to score. The good news was that we had some really good moments of soccer, but we need to be more consistent over 90 minutes. As we get into the heart of league play, we just have to get closer and closer to more complete performances."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession for the first 15 minutes and forced one big save from Blue Demon keeper Gandhi Cruz on a good strike from sophomore Kyle Linhares.
  • Everything changed in the 28th minute as senior Joe DaLuz found classmate Zach Riviere who took a touch to Stefan Stojanovic on the left side. The junior fired with his right and redirected it to the far post to make it 1-0.
  • Just a minute later, Stojanovic was at it again when sophomore Marlon Tabora took it down the right side. He tapped it to classmate John Franks who went one more to Stojanovic for his second goal of the contest.
  • The Blue Demons did not go away, however, as the team looked dangerous after a number of GU substitutions. The team would break through in the 41st minute to make it 2-1 which would stand at the half.
  • The second half was a more even matchup with both squads having possession.
  • In the 73rd minute, the game changed as a foul was called in the box on a Blue Demon. This resulted in a GU penalty kick which was buried by junior Dante Polvara making the score 3-1 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot DePaul 17-4 and the Blue & Gray had eight shots on goal to the Blue Demon's one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks, while DePaul notched four.
  • Nikopolidis picked up the win in the net despite no saves in the contest.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will head out on the road for a midweek contest at Seton Hall on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on FS1 and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
