First-Half Goals Propel No. 1/1 Hoyas Past Seton Hall

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Seton Hall University Pirates 4-2 at Carroll Field on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-0 on the year and 3-0 in the league, while the Pirates drop to 4-4-2 and 0-3-0 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "We were as good as we've been for the first 45 minutes. To score four goals in the first half on the road against a team the caliber of Seton Hall is just remarkable. The guys were really sharp and very focused, I didn't need to get them overly excited about tonight because they were dialed in after last year. As I've said before, we have to stretch it from 45 minutes to closer to 90 for a complete performance."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession from the get-go. GU had its foot on the gas and never let up.
  • The first goal of the game came in the 18th minute as senior Zach Riviere took it into the middle and shot. The ball was saved by Pirate keeper Andreas Nota, but Riviere stayed with it and fired the rebound back in to make it 1-0.
  • Just four minutes later, it was senior Joe DaLuz getting into the act as classmate Sean Zawadzki fed him the ball as DaLuz went down the left side. He controlled it and finished to give GU the 2-0 advantage.
  • DaLuz returned the favor to junior Will Sands with 37:00 on the clock as he passed it to Sands who took it down the left side himself and found the back of the net tallying the third goal of the night.
  • In the final minute of first-half action, sophomore Marlon Tabora sent a free kick into the box which found the head of junior Daniel Wu as he tallied his first goal of the season making it 4-0 at the break.
  • Seton Hall did not go away quietly as CJ Tibbling managed a pair of scores in the second half.
  • However, The Hall did not find a way back as Georgetown picked up the 4-2 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Seton Hall 21-9 and the Blue & Gray had 13 shots on goal to the Pirates' seven.
  • The Hoyas were awarded three corner kicks, while Seton Hall did not take one in the match.
  • Senior Giannis Nikopolidis picked up the win in the net with five saves to his credit.
