Sands’ Big Night Helps No. 2/2 Hoyas to Victory

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team, led by junior Will Sands, defeated the Xavier University Musketeers 3-1 on Saturday night at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas move to 13-1 on the year and 7-1 in the league, while the Musketeers move to 8-7 and 2-5 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "You need to give a lot of credit to Xavier, they have some of the better attacking players in the league that we really needed to manage. To go down at Xavier and find a way back is a huge result for our guys. It's nice to have different players step up each night and tonight was Will Sands' turn with a career performance."
How it Happened
  • Xavier got on the board first as a header at the far post was sent in to make it 1-0 in the 14th minute.
  • Despite Georgetown dominating possession, it was the Musketeers once more knocking on the door as graduate student Ethan Koehler was forced to come up with a big save to keep it a one-goal deficit.
  • Everything changed in the 42nd minute as sophomore Marlon Tabora sent a long cross to the far post. It found the head of junior Will Sands who managed to hit in on target and into the back of the net to tie the game at one which would stand at the half.
  • The Hoyas added another in the 56th minute when a shot by senior Zach Riviere was poked away by the keeper. The rebound went to sophomore Kyle Linhares on the right side who passed it back across the goal. Sands played the hero once again getting on the end of it and finishing to make it 2-1.
  • The Blue & Gray had a little magic left as freshman Blaine Mabie hit a cross which Sands fired at the net. XU keeper Matthew Rosenberg laid out for the save, but the ball ricocheted back to graduate student Chris Le who put it away for the first goal of his career as well as Sands' fifth point of the night.
  • That score would stand down the stretch as GU came away with the 3-1 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Xavier 12-6 and the Blue & Gray had eight shots on goal to the Musketeer's three.
  • The Hoyas were awarded four corner kicks, while Xavier took two in the match.
  • Koehler was awarded the win in the net with four saves to his credit.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will stay on the road as the Blue & Gray travels to Marquette University for a matchup with the Golden Eagles on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on Flo Sports and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
