WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell due to a late goal 1-0 to the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Saturday night at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 13-2 on the year and 7-2 in the league, while the Golden Eagles improve to 7-8-1 and 4-5-1 in conference play for the year.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "We did everything we needed to do to win, so it's tough to not come away with a result. We just didn't take our chances and they hit a great goal late. I don't place fault with our guys at all, they showed up and played with the right mentality but it wasn't their night and the goals didn't fall which is rare for this group."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas controlled play throughout the game with a number of good chances.
- In the 10th minute, it was Zach Riviere whose shot from the left side was saved by the hand of MU keeper Chandler Hallwood.
- Sophomore Will Sands had another look at the net late in the first half as the Hoyas kept searching for the first goal of the game. The teams would not find the back of the net going into the break in a scoreless tie.
- The shots continued from the Blue & Gray into the second half, but Hallwood would continue to thwart every attempt.
- In the 86th minute, it all changed as AJ Franklin hit a left-footed strike into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
- Georgetown would have one more chance late as the Hoyas had a penalty kick opportunity just a minute later that was saved. The rebound went back to senior Aidan Rocha who shot it back into the net which was saved again as GU was stopped with minutes remaining.
- The Hoyas would not find the equalizer eventually falling 1-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Marquette 21-8 and the Blue & Gray had nine shots on goal to the Golden Eagles' four.
- The Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks, while Marquette took one in the match.
