Hoyas Win Final BIG EAST Matchup of Season

WASHINGTON – On a rainy Friday afternoon, the Georgetown University field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova University 2-1 at Cooper Field. The Hoyas improve to 9-8 (3-4 BIG EAST) and Villanova falls to 6-12 (1-5 BIG EAST).

Despite the win today, Georgetown has officially been eliminated from playoff contention. Temple University defeated No. 20 UConn 3-2 in overtime to secure the fourth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.

How it Happened
  • The game began with a downpour, and the rain continued to fall throughout the entire game. As both teams adjusted to the weather, the game remained scoreless. The Hoyas and the Wildcats were tied 0-0 at the half.
  • Georgetown found its stride in the second half. The Hoyas earned a penalty corner just one minute into the third period and capitalized. Emma Street eventually found Vivienne Trumpbour who shot and scored to give the Hoyas the lead. Villanova took three shots in the quarter but could not capitalize on any of them as goalkeeper Ciara Weets swatted away all the attempts. The Hoyas led 1-0 going into the final period.
  • With 6:36 left in the fourth quarter, Sophie Towne sped down the field on a breakaway. Towne was fouled hard in the penalty circle and earned a penalty stroke. Towne buried the ball in the cage and gave Georgetown a 2-0 lead.
  • Two minutes later, Villanova found itself on a fastbreak of its own. One-on-one with Weets, Villanova managed to score and cut into Georgetown's lead. The Hoyas stood strong on defense and did not allow another shot in the period. Georgetown held on to win in regulation.

Of Note
  • The Hoyas and the Wildcats each took nine shots during the game, but Georgetown totaled five saves.
  • Towne scored her sixth goal of the season and is now the team leader in points and goals.
  • Goalkeeper Ciara Weets had five saves to bring her season total to 105.
