Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1/1 Hoyas Down Butler 1-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Butler University Bulldogs 1-0 at Shaw Field on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-0 on the year and 4-0 in the league, while the Bulldogs drop to 3-6-1 and 1-2-0 in conference play for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "What you saw today was a feeling of some tired legs from the Seton Hall game. Seton Hall felt great but with only two days in between games and getting back late it was really predictable that we weren't going to be as sharp. The serves weren't quite as good as they could be, we had some really good chances that didn't miss by much. It was just that little bit of crispness we were missing."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown opened the game with chances as a left-footed shot from Zach Riviere went just wide.
  • Butler had few chances but one from distance did not get past the arms of GU keeper Ethan Koehler.
  • Despite eight Hoya corners in the first as well as chances with the ball bouncing around the box, the Butler defense stood strong as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Hoyas continued to push with multiple chances early in the second.
  • The difference came in the 59th minute as a foul just outside the box set up an opportunity for the Blue & Gray. Junior captain Dante Polvara stepped up and buried it into the top corner for the unassisted goal.
  • In the final minute, Butler had a chance, but the ball would be headed out as GU held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Butler 14-7 and the Blue & Gray had five shots on goal to the Bulldogs' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 11 corner kicks, while Butler took just one in the match.
  • Koehler picked up the win in the net with two saves to his credit.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will head out on the road for a midweek contest at Providence on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on Flo Sports and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
