Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Defeats Salem, 86-48

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team won its home opener over the Salem University Tigers 86-48 on Friday evening at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas controlled the pace from the opening tip to cruise to victory and improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "As a coach and being up 40 with five minutes left in the third, you try to give your younger kids an opportunity. Tonight was about opportunity, getting your freshmen a chance to get on the floor because the opportunity might not come again as the games get tighter. When you're playing like that, sometimes you see mistakes being made because they're young and still learning, but now we have film that we can go back and show them how to play at the next level."
How it Happened
  • Senior Jillian Archer blocked Salem's (0-1) first shot of the game and it set the tone for the Blue & Gray.
  • A layup from sophomore Kelsey Ransom sparked an 8-0 run as Georgetown controlled the pace.
  • Late in the first, it was graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris who hit a layup at the 4:07 mark as GU went on a 13-1 run to close out the first leading 28-8.
  • Salem scored first in the second, but then it was all Hoyas as GU continued to score at will leading by as much as 30 on a second-chance layup from freshman Ariel Jenkins.
  • Every Tiger attempt was stopped as the Blue & Gray held the 49-16 advantage at the half.
  • Georgetown began the third with a 9-0 run fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Bolden-Morris.
  • Salem made a charge late in the period to get the deficit under 40, 68-34, as Howard tinkered with the lineup.
  • The Hoyas would keep on battling in the final stanza as GU cruised to the 86-48 victory.
Of Note
  • Archer led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth career double-double.
  • Bolden-Morris had 13 points as well as nine rebounds, while Jenkins managed 13 points and eight rebounds in her first game on campus.
  • Ransom added eight points to go along with a career-best 11 assists.
  • The Hoyas shot 49.3 percent (33-67) and allowed just 18.7 percent (14-75) shooting by the Tigers.
  • GU outrebounded Salem 73-28, which was a program best.
  • The game tipped off a five-game homestand for the Blue & Gray.
