WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 70-55 to the Davidson College Wildcats on Wednesday evening at McDonough Arena. With the loss, Georgetown drops to 2-1 overall, while Davidson moves to 2-2 on the year.
Head Coach James Howard
- "We didn't get out and their 10 threes hurt. They had points off of our turnovers, some bad turnovers, that led to easy baskets. That run in the first half really hurt us, and even though we tried to make a run in the third quarter and cut it to eight, we gave up a backside rebound and they hit two more threes to stretch it back out again. We need to be more disciplined in touching up on the ball, especially when we play a good shooting team."
How it Happened
- The first quarter belonged to Davidson as turnovers allowed the Wildcats to build an 11-point lead going up 15-4 late in the period.
- A layup from sophomore Kelsey Ransom would cut it to nine in the final 30 seconds of the first as GU was trailing 15-6.
- Davidson would increase the lead in the second, but a triple from sophomore Yasmin Ott sparked an 8-3 run, including five points from Ransom to make it 23-14 midway through.
- Georgetown battled to get back in it, but a 9-0 run increased the deficit.
- With six seconds left in the first half, a turnover from the Wildcats resulted in a bucket from senior Jillian Archer on the other end as GU went into the break trailing 37-19.
- Looking at a 20-point deficit, Georgetown chipped away at the lead with a 9-0 run early in the third started by a layup from Ransom and included a 5-for-5 performance from the line for the Blue & Gray to make it 39-28 with 4:51 left in the quarter.
- The Wildcats would answer again, leading 49-36 at the end of the third period.
- The teams traded buckets early in the fourth which never allowed the Hoyas to find a way back as GU eventually fell 70-55.
Of Note
- Ransom led the way with 13 points as the lone Hoya in double figures, while also pulling down a team-best nine rebounds to go along with seven assists.
- Archer managed nine points, six rebounds and four blocks in the contest.
- The Hoyas shot 38.6 percent (17-44) and allowed 45.6 percent (26-57) shooting by the Wildcats.
- GU was outrebounded by Davidson 31-29 and had 22 turnovers to the Wildcats' 16.
