WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team put up a fight, but fell 66-56 to the Columbia University Lions in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. With the loss, Georgetown drops to 2-2 overall, while Columbia stays perfect at 5-0 on the year.
Head Coach James Howard
- "Our team never gave up. We had a rough scoring first half, and we challenged them in the locker room at halftime. We came out and made a run to take the lead. We stayed with a group that played a large amount of minutes, but they showed that they had some fight in them. Columbia is a very solid team that will have a good year, so this was a good early-season test for us. I think this builds our confidence, so we can go to the next game and put everything together to get the win."
How it Happened
- It was a low-scoring affair for both squads in the first quarter due to turnovers and missed shots. Columbia led at the end of the period 8-4.
- Georgetown kept it close until midway through the second quarter when a 10-2 run gave the Lions some breathing room.
- Buckets from junior Graceann Bennett and sophomore Yasmin Ott pulled the Blue & Gray within eight, 22-14, going into halftime.
- Georgetown came out fired up in the second half as graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris started things off with a 3-pointer.
- The defense was stifling as GU forced back-to-back turnovers and the Blue & Gray took advantage as Bennett and senior Jillian Archer both scored to pull within one.
- Columbia would score, but Archer came right back down with a second-chance layup to make it 24-23 as GU battled at every possession.
- Georgetown would tie it late in the third on an Archer free throw, but the Lions answered with a triple to regain the lead.
- On the next possession, Bolden-Morris sank another from downtown sending the crowd into a frenzy. A late layup from Ransom gave the Hoyas the 29-28 lead at the end of the period.
- The teams traded buckets to start the fourth as it would be a battle down the stretch.
- A layup from Bennett put the Blue & Gray ahead 31-30, but Columbia answered with another 3-pointer.
- Looking at a four-point deficit with 2:27 to go, Archer hit a pair of free throws and Ransom drove for the layup to tie the game at 42, sending it to overtime.
- Georgetown would trail by as much as four in the first overtime but it was Ransom who put the team on her back in the final two minutes to get it done and force another period as the game was tied at 53.
- Columbia hit a 3-pointer to begin the second overtime. Georgetown countered with a bucket from graduate student Anita Kelava, but another triple was the dagger as the Lions pulled away for the 66-56 final.
Of Note
- Bolden-Morris led the way with 14 points, while Archer posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
- Bennett and Ransom closed out those in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
