Hoyas Drop Opening Game of Wooden Legacy to San Diego State

WASHINGTON – Aminu Mohammed (20) and Dante Harris (19) combined for 39 points in Georgetown's 73-56 loss to the San Diego State University Aztecs late Thursday night in Anaheim, California. It was the first game of the Paycom Wooden Legacy Tournament. With the setback, the Hoyas slip to 2-2 on the season while the Aztecs improve to 4-1.

ON THE RECORD
"We just didn't have enough. One - we have to make shots. Two - we have to make passes. We only had six assists tonight. If we want to beat a team, our shooters have to shoot shots and make shots and we have to have more than six assists."
- Head Coach Patrick Ewing

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Aminu Mohammed recorded his first career 20-point game, pouring in 20 on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor.
  • Dante Harris finished with 19 points, three assists and a pair of steals in his 35 minutes of work.
  • Kaiden Rice added eight points and four boards for the Hoyas.
  • Donald Carey pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while adding four points and three helpers.
  • Timothy Ighoefe tied his career-high with three blocks against the Aztecs to go along with seven rebounds.
  • The Hoyas were narrowly outrebounded by the Aztecs (39-38) but had a better performance on the offensive glass (12-11).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams exchanged buckets through the opening 4:28 of the game with Mohammed and Harris scoring five and four points, respectively, for a deadlock at nine.
  • The duo combined for all 21 points over the first 10:29 of action to be capped off by a strong putback by Mohammed underneath the basket.
  • Ryan Mutombo's contested two-pointer in the paint pulled the Hoyas to within one, 24-23.
  • Rice hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put Georgetown up two, 28-26, following a great dish from Harris who reeled in his own rebound at the top of the key at the 6:25 mark of the first.
  • Harris drove the lane with 30 seconds to go, rolling in a layup and scoring his 16th point of the frame before SDSU found another answer and went into the break with the 40-32 advantage.
  • After two quick buckets by the Aztecs to open the second half, Georgetown responded with a 7-0 run lead by Mohammed with a pair of jumpers in the paint to cut the SDSU lead to five, 44-39.
  • Despite 10 unanswered from SDSU, the momentum shifted to the Hoyas when Ighoefe swatted a shot before an alley-oop dunk by Jalin Billingsley, sparking an 11-1 run and pulling the Blue & Gray to within four, 57-53, with 9:39 remaining in the half.
  • Following a timeout by the home team, the Aztecs pulled away for the 73-56 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Harris' 16 points to open the game were the most in a single half since Javhon Blair put up 18 in the second against DePaul on March 6, 2021.
  • Mohammed has registered double-digit scoring performances in each of his first four games.
  • Harris recorded his third-straight game with at least 10 points.
  • Carey's nine rebounds matched his career high set against Navy on Dec. 1, 2020.
