Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Georgetown Win its Fifth BIG EAST Championship

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's soccer team took down St. John's on Sunday afternoon to earn it the title of BIG EAST Champions. The No. 2 seeded Hoyas beat the No. 4 seeded Red Storm 1-0 for the second time this season and topped Butler on Thursday night in the quarterfinals to complete the Championship run. This is the fifth time in six years that Georgetown has won the BIG EAST Championship.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"First off, St. John's gave such a good effort. They really pushed us and we knew it was going to be a very challenging game. Credit to Ian and his team, they had a great season, and I think today we just found a way to get a result. I am really proud of the kids as it hasn't been an easy year. We have had to overcome lots of small things along the way including injuries and illness and from the outside it looks like smooth sailing, but it has been a challenge to stay on task and keep pushing ahead one game at a time. I am so happy for the older girls to go out with a championship and for the younger girls to see what it takes to win a championship. After winning five in the last six years, we have raised a pretty high bar for ourselves."

"Excited to see who we will be playing in the national tournament. I fully expect us to have a home game and be a seeded team going into next week. We hope to be playing next Saturday up on Shaw Field."

How it Happened
  • Georgetown owned the majority of possession in the first half as it tallied four shots.
  • Neither the Hoyas nor the Red Storm had a clear chance on goal throughout the first 45 minutes of action.
  • To start the second half, midfielder Julia Leas found the ball at her feet in the box. She spun her defender, beat another, and took a shot hitting the far left post reflecting away from the goal.
  • The Hoyas earned a corner in the 64th minute. Senior Maya Fernandez-Powell played a lofted ball into the six which centerback Sydney Cummings ran onto and headed the ball into the back of the net.
  • In the 83rd minute, Jessica Garziano had a breakaway down the middle of the field. Allie Augur made an outstretched save to tip Garziano's shot outside the frame of the goal for a corner to keep the Hoyas up 1-0.
  • Two minutes later Augur made another save from a longball hit in from the left flank towards the goal.
  • The Hoyas battled till the last whistle and were able to hold on to their 1-0 lead to claim the victory.

Of Note
  • Augur made two saves in the game to earn the shutout.
  • The Hoyas had nine shots to the Red Storm's two.
  • Georgetown earned nine corners to St. John's one.
  • The Hoyas are ranked 17th by TopDrawerSoccer and receiving votes by United Soccer Coaches.
