Hoyas Defeat Navy 73-62 in Season Opener

ANNAPOLIS – The Georgetown University women's basketball team won its season opener 73-62 at Navy (0-1) on Tuesday evening at Alumni Hall. The Hoyas battled late to pick up the victory and move to 1-0 on the young season.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "For the first game, we were very pleased with the outcome but we know that we still have a lot of work to do to continue to build our defense and to build our finishes. We were able to get four players in double figures tonight and I was very proud of Milan (Bolden-Morris) for shooting the ball extremely well. She was really able to pull them out of their zone knocking down big shots in both halves. I was also impressed with the growth of Graceann Bennett, the boost we got from Anita Kelava off of the bench and seeing Jillian Archer flirting with a double-double is really positive moving forward."
How it Happened
  • The first points of the season came from down low as junior Graceann Bennett sank a layup to start the 2021-22 campaign.
  • The lead would swing back and forth until a 3-pointer from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris bookended the 8-0 Hoya run for a 12-5 advantage.
  • Navy would creep back, but a trey from Bolden-Morris in the final minute made it 17-15 at the end of the first.
  • It was a battle from downtown throughout the second period and both teams got hot.
  • Georgetown would lead 28-21 on Bolden-Morris' fifth 3-pointer of the contest, but Navy answered back with a 7-0 run on the other end.
  • Late in the half, the Hoyas were active on defense and sophomore Kelsey Ransom forced a turnover and converted the fast break layup. However, free throws in the final second of action made it 37-33 at the half.
  • Navy cut it to five early in the second half, but Bolden-Morris answered with her sixth triple of the game for a new career high. Senior Jillian Archer followed that up with a layup as the Hoyas went up 10 forcing a Navy timeout.
  • Late in the third, the Mids would come back to make it 52-50 in favor of the Hoyas at the end of the period.
  • Navy cut it to three 58-55 at the 6:54 mark in the fourth quarter, however, a layup from Ransom off of a turnover sparked an 8-0 run as Georgetown began to pull away.
  • The Mids would not find a way to recover as the Blue & Gray held on for the 73-62 victory.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris led the way with a career-high 22 points going 6-8 from beyond the arc and setting a personal best for 3-pointers in a game.
  • Bennett had a career-best 18 points while also pulling down nine boards.
  • Ransom added 12 points to go along with four assists and as many steals, while graduate student Anita Kelava rounded out those in double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds in her return to the Hilltop.
  • The Hoyas shot 44 percent (28-64) and allowed just 37 percent (20-54) shooting by the Mids.
  • GU outrebounded Navy 51-27 and forced 13 turnovers.
  • The win was GU's first season-opening victory since the 2018-19 campaign.
