Georgetown Closes Out Nonconference Play with Win Over Coppin State

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team finished up nonconference action with a 59-53 victory over the visiting Coppin State Eagles on Monday evening at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-4 on the season, while CSU drops to an even 5-5 overall.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "The effort coming out of the locker room to start the game needs to match that at the end of the game. We continue to work on trying to be better at the start. We were more urgent in the second half, but if our scorers aren't going from the start, we tend to be on our heels a little bit. With this break, we're hoping to work on us, cover out, cover in and make some adjustments. This is an opportunity to really look at the first half of the season and see what fits, what doesn't and to get the right flow out there on the court."
How it Happened
  • Coppin State scored first, but it was Georgetown that would gain the momentum with a 6-0 run led by four points from sophomore Kelsey Ransom.
  • Graceann Bennett would connect on a put back with 3:44 remaining in the first period which would also be the last bucket for both teams as the Hoyas led 12-7 at the end of the stanza.
  • The Eagles continued to shoot from outside hoping to get hot and even regained a lead at the 6:10 mark in the second period.
  • With each advance, the Blue & Gray would have an answer as scores from both senior Jillian Archer and graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris would tie it on two occasions over the final four minutes of action.
  • The teams went into the break in a 20-20 deadlock.
  • The third quarter saw the Eagles try to pull away leading by as much as five at one point. With 1:11 to go, Bolden-Morris would hit a triple and Bennett added a layup to tie the game. A late free throw from Coppin make it 42-41 in favor of the Eagles going into the final stanza.
  • Bennett began the fourth quarter with a layup, and the Blue & Gray would never relinquish the lead.
  • As senior Shanniah Wright put the Hoyas up by seven on two occasions, the Eagles never found a way back.
  • Despite cutting it to one, GU answered with a Bennett free throw as Georgetown held on for the 59-53 victory.
Of Note
  • Bennett led the way with 14 points as well as a squad-best nine rebounds and three assists.
  • Ransom managed 13, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
  • Archer and Bolden-Morris rounded out those in double figures with 12 points apiece.
  • The Hoyas shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field and allowed just 27.9 percent (17-61) shooting by the Eagles.
  • Georgetown and Coppin tied with 40 rebounds apiece, and GU forced 13 Eagles turnovers.
