Hoyas Fall at Marquette

MILWAUKEE – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in its first game in a month losing to the Marquette University Golden Eagles 68-32 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

How it Happened
  • In a quick first half, the Hoyas kept it close behind the play of sophomore Teaghan Flaherty and senior Shanniah Wright in their first starts of the season.
  • Late in the period, back-to-back triples and a traditional three-point play allowed the Golden Eagles (11-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) to move ahead as MU led 21-9 at the end of the first.
  • It was a tough second quarter for the Blue & Gray as the squad went cold enabling the Golden Eagles to take a significant lead.
  • In the final seconds of the half, Kelsey Ransom took it down the court and sank a layup to make it 38-13 at the break.
  • A bucket from freshman Kaliyah Myricks and a 3-pointer by graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris gave the Hoyas momentum to open the second half.
  • Junior Graceann Bennett would add four points for the small 9-4 run before Marquette answered with a run of its own.
  • Even a late three-point play from graduate student Kaylin West could not slow MU as the Golden Eagles led 55-27 at the end of the third.
  • Fouls plagued Georgetown in the final quarter as GU would not find a way back into the game eventually falling 68-32.
Of Note
  • Myricks led the way with six points for the Hoyas, while Bennett pulled in a squad-best seven rebounds to go along with four points.
  • The Hoyas shot 23.1 percent (12-52) from the field and allowed 41.4 percent (29-70) shooting by the Golden Eagles.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 51-33, and the GU defense forced 11 Golden Eagles turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will make the short trip to Chicago to face the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday in a 3 p.m. matchup at Wintrust Arena. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
All Georgetown women's basketball home games are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. All Georgetown University indoor on-campus intercollegiate athletics events will be played with no fans in attendance for the month of January due to the emergence and rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the Washington, D.C., region, across the country, and globally.
