Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls to No. 2/1 UConn

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team put together an impressive first half, but couldn't hold on in the second as the squad fell 64-40 to the No. 2/1 University of Connecticut Huskies on Friday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-10 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies move to 16-1 overall and 13-0 in league play.
Head Coach James Howard
  • "It's the little things. When you're playing the No. 1 ranked team in the country you have to have those small goals that you're trying to achieve. I think that was our game plan going in. I'm always really proud of these young ladies and how they fight. I've been with teams that have laid down against UConn but for two games we've just fought. We're not there offensively yet, but they fight."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas came out of the gate fired up as freshman Kelsey Ransom had a steal and layup on the opening possession.
  • UConn went up by three, but a 5-0 run on a trey from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris and another layup off of a turnover from Ransom put GU up 7-5.
  • The Huskies answered again from downtown before Bolden-Morris hit her second triple and junior Jillian Archer sank a layup on the back side as the Blue & Gray clung to the 12-8 advantage.
  • UConn regained the lead, but Georgetown ended the first quarter trailing 13-12.
  • The Hoyas once again took control in the first minute of the second as sophomore Graceann Bennett connected on a second-chance layup and freshman Yasmin Ott knocked one down from downtown to make it 17-13 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
  • The Huskies closed out the half on a 13-3 run as GU went into the break down 29-21.
  • UConn scored the first six points of the second, and began to build the double-digit lead. Georgetown attempted a comeback, but never found the answer trailing 47-28 at the end of the third.
  • The final points would not come down the stretch for the Blue & Gray resulting in the 64-40 decision.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 15 points as the lone Hoya in double figures, she also managed four steals.
  • Junior Shanniah Wright posted a squad-high five rebounds to go along with two points.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 31 percent (15-48) and allowed 44 percent (23-52) shooting by the Huskies.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 37-26, and had 21 turnovers while forcing 16 for UConn.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will close out a scheduled five-game homestand on Monday as the squad hosts Creighton at McDonough Arena. The opening tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Monika Moore and Jeremy Huber calling the action.
