Georgetown Loses a Heartbreaker to Creighton

WASHINGTONThe Georgetown University women's basketball team couldn't hang on dropping a 42-41 decision to the Creighton University Bluejays on Monday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-11 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Bluejays move to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Head Coach James Howard

  • "We're putting ourselves in a position to win, and now we have to find a way and learn how to do it. Not having a veteran team and making some bad decisions all circle around learning how to win."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown opened the scoring on a pair of free throws from freshman Kelsey Ransom, but the first stanza would prove to be a defensive battle.
  • With the Hoyas leading 10-8, the Bluejays knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers. However, Junior Shanniah Wright fought through the defense to convert a traditional three-point play with eight seconds left in the first as GU ended the quarter trailing 14-13.
  • Creighton would lead by as much as seven midway through the second period.
  • A jumper from Milan Bolden-Morris sparked a solo 7-0 run for the graduate student over a four-minute span to tie the game at 20.
  • The Bluejays would connect late as Creighton held the 22-20 advantage going into the break.
  • CU clung to the lead through much of the third stanza until Bolden-Morris hit the pull-up jumper at 5:33 to put the Blue & Gray on top 28-27.
  • She would add a triple and sophomore Graceann Bennett made a layup following a Creighton turnover as Georgetown turned the tide.
  • Georgetown would end the third leading 35-30.
  • The Bluejays scored the first five points of the final period to tie the game at 35 and force a Hoya timeout.
  • Bennett answered the call with back-to-back buckets and, following a defensive stop, Bolden-Morris sank a shot from the baseline.
  • Creighton came right back down and hit one from beyond the arc to make it a one-possession game with 1:20 left to play.
  • The final minute would be fouls and jump balls as the Bluejays tried to gain back possession. Creighton would get the jump ball before Georgetown would get in the bonus and had one last look.
  • Temi Carda was fouled on the last shot and knocked down both free throws as Georgetown lost the heartbreaker 41-40.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris led the way with 17 points as the lone Hoya in double figures.
  • Bennett managed nine points to go along with six rebounds, while graduate student Taylor Baur pulled down a squad-high seven rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 30 percent (14-46) and allowed 26 percent (12-47) shooting by the Bluejays.
  • Georgetown out rebounded CU 37-30, and the teams had 12 turnovers apiece.
Up Next
  • Georgetown will head out on the road on Wednesday as the squad travels to Seton Hall University. The opening tip at Walsh Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Sean Saint Jacques and Phil Stern calling the action.
