SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team was right on the cusp, but couldn't find the answer in overtime dropping a tough 79-72 decision to the Seton Hall University Pirates Thursday morning at Walsh Gymnasium in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-12 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates move to 10-6 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Head Coach James Howard
- "We've got to become more disciplined down the stretch. It kills me to know that for three quarters, we play well and in the fourth quarter that inexperience takes over."
- "Discipline and doing all of the right things, that's when you're going to learn to win. But you have to do it when it's a winning quarter and that's the fourth quarter. The last six of seven games we've been in it and we just don't know how to win coming down the stretch."
How it Happened
- Seton Hall got on the board first and built a small lead thanks to back-to-back triples.
- Fouls plagued the Blue & Gray throughout the first quarter with the Pirates building a 10-point lead from the line. Georgetown would trail 16-6 at the end of the period.
- Freshman Yasmin Ott opened the second stanza with a jumper from the top of the key and junior Shanniah Wright added a put back.
- The quarter was fast and furious as the teams traded buckets on each end.
- In the final two minutes, the Hoyas scored five quick points on a jumper from graduate student Taylor Baur and a triple by classmate Milan Bolden-Morris to make it an eight-point deficit at the half, 31-23.
- Georgetown cut it to three coming out of the locker room as junior Jillian Archer was a force with five quick points.
- The Blue & Gray staged a 10-2 run including a steal and layup from Ott and a triple by sophomore Graceann Bennett to tie the game at 40 and send the GU bench to its feet.
- Bennett would continue to roll as the Pirates fought back with the lead swinging back and forth. A late bucket from Archer made it 47-46 at the end of the quarter as Seton Hall held the advantage.
- Archer managed to tie the game at 50 early in the fourth, and a traditional three-point play from freshman Kelsey Ransom gave the Hoyas the lead 53-52.
- Back-to-back and-ones from Ransom and Archer would keep GU right there, but with every advance, including a Baur bucket at the end of the shot clock, the Pirates had an answer on the other end.
- As the seconds ticked away, Georgetown clung to the lead but a trey with less than 10 second to go tied the game at 64 sending it into overtime.
- Jumper from Ransom and Archer put the Hoyas up one 68-67 early in the overtime period, but SHU staged an 8-0 run that the Blue & Gray could not recover from eventually falling 79-72.
Of Note
- Bennett led the way with 17 points as one of three Hoyas in double figures, she also pulled down eight boards and posted two blocks.
- Archer tallied 16 points to go along with seven boards, while Ransom had 14 points, eight rebounds and career-high 10 assists.
- Graduate student Taylor Baur pulled down a squad-high 10 rebounds.
- The Blue & Gray shot 50 percent (30-60) and allowed just 37.1 percent (23-62) shooting by the Pirates.
- Georgetown outrebounded The Hall 43-30, but had 24 turnovers to SHU's 15.
