Georgetown Loses a Close One in Home Finale

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost another close one on Sunday falling 64-56 to the Villanova University Wildcats in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena in GU's home finale. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 1-13 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats move to 13-4 overall and 8-4 in league play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "At the end of the day, it's great being in games but it's even better when you win. These kids are tired of all of the moral victories, we want to win. We're going to go out there and we're going to continue to compete to try to win. We have two games left that will be tough, but if we can get a win going into the tournament it will help us. The team believes we can win, I believe we can win and now we need to get in the mindset to make it happen."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown opened the scoring with a pair of free throws from freshman Kelsey Ransom.
  • The Hoyas would continue to hold the slight advantage as the squad attacked the rim and converted second-chance points.
  • Late in the first stanza, the 'Cats tied the score at 11 and that would stand through the quarter.
  • Villanova would take the lead in the second but neither squad could find a run as it stayed a one-possession game.
  • Late in the second period, the Wildcats would hit back-to-back 3-pointers to move ahead by seven, 26-19.
  • Freshman Yasmin Ott managed a 4-0 run of her own to cut it back to three and a bucket in the final seconds from 'Nova made it 28-23 at the half.
  • Sophomore Graceann Bennett came out hot in the second half with a traditional three-point play and another layup to tie the game at 28 and force a Villanova timeout.
  • Villanova managed a layup out of the timeout and clung to a small lead, while the Blue & Gray looked for an opportunity to move ahead.
  • The bigs would continue to work down low keeping it close and a layup from junior Jillian Archer pulled the Hoyas within three, 43-40, at the end of the third.
  • The 'Cats would knock down a shot from downtown early in the final quarter, but Ransom and junior Shanniah Wright kept the Hoyas right there.
  • Midway through the period, Villanova held the seven-point lead. However, graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris popped off the screen and stepped back for a triple as the Blue & Gray would not go away quietly.
  • Georgetown had chances down the stretch, but could not find the late buckets eventually falling 64-56.
Of Note
  • Bennett led the way for the second-straight game with 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Ransom scored 10 points as well as a team-best six rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block.
  • Wright tallied seven points and six rebounds in the contest as well.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 40.4 percent (23-57) but allowed 46.9 percent (23-49) shooting by the Wildcats.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Villanova 34-29, but had 18 turnovers to VU's 17.
