Hoyas Hold on for 62-58 Overtime Victory Over St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team needed extra time, but came away with the 62-58 overtime victory against the St. John's University Red Storm in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-13 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Red Storm drops to 7-13 overall and 4-11 in league play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "By sheer hustle and not allowing a mistake on offense to become a mistake on defense, Kelsey showed what it takes to win. Down the stretch, Taylor Baur stepped up hitting four crucial free throws. But this was just a great team effort. Those who didn't play, those on the bench and those who played, everyone had a hand in this win tonight."

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas began the game on fire as the squad managed four-consecutive triples to build a 14-5 lead and force a Red Storm timeout. Graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris contributed two, while junior Jillian Archer and sophomore Graceann Bennett both knocked one down.
  • The squads would battle with GU hitting from downtown and St. John's getting it done down low.
  • A late trey by freshman Yasmin Ott and a layup from junior Shanniah Wright made it 24-18 in favor of the Hoyas at the end of the first quarter.
  • Both teams cooled off in the second stanza as the pace slowed and they went to work in the paint.
  • Georgetown maintained a small lead thanks to a balanced attack making it 32-29 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the half.
  • It would stay close through the third as Archer continued to attack.
  • Late in the stanza, St. John's moved ahead on a pair of free throws with a minute to go making it 43-42.
  • Looking at a three-point deficit, a triple from Ott at 7:40 sparked a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter as the Hoyas went ahead 51-47 forcing a Red Storm timeout.
  • The Blue & Gray would hang onto the one-possession lead as the minutes ticked away. St. John's tied the game on a layup and the Hoyas had some looks but couldn't find the answer, sending the game into overtime tied at 53.
  • St. John's would score first, but the Hoyas came right back as freshman Kelsey Ransom fed graduate student Taylor Baur who was fouled on the shot and knocked down both from the charity stripe to tie the game at 58.
  • On the next possession, Ransom would steal the ball and drive in for the layup to put GU on top 60-58.
  • Ransom came up big once again poking it away and diving after the loose ball. She found Baur who was fouled and hit two more from the line as the Blue & Gray held on for the 62-58 overtime victory.

Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 12 points and seven steals as well as five rebounds as the Hoyas boasted three players in double figures.
  • Bennett was second with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Bolden-Morris managed 10 points.
  • Baur was big on the boards pulling down a squad-best 12 rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 37.5 percent (24-64) and allowed 36.4 percent (24-66) shooting by the Red Storm.
  • Georgetown out-rebounded St. John's 47-40, but had 14 turnovers to SJU's 13.
  • The win marked GU's first victory at Carnesecca in 12 years, with the last triumph coming during the 2008-09 season.

Up Next
  • Georgetown will close out the regular season on the road traveling to Xavier University on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup at Cintas Center. The game will be broadcast live on FS1 with Matt Schumacker and Mike Schmaltz calling the action.
