CINCINNATI – Junior
Jillian Archer had a career day but a first-quarter deficit was too much to overcome for the Georgetown University women's basketball team as the squad fell 58-48 to the Xavier University Musketeers in the regular season finale at Cintas Center Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas close out the regular season 2-14 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Musketeers move to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Head Coach James Howard
- "That was the worst start we've had in the last nine games and we dug ourselves into a hole. Mentally I asked them at halftime where they were because as a coach you can't play reckless you have to play the game. This was a good team so for us to come out there and not follow the scout and do our jobs, that was unacceptable. That 10-0 run to start made the difference in the game."
How it Happened
- Xavier came out on fire with a 10-0 run over the first two and a half minutes forcing an early Hoya timeout.
- Archer got the Blue & Gray on the board but the Musketeers continued to build the advantage as it ballooned to 14 midway through the period.
- Late free throws from Archer made it 23-11 at the end of the first.
- The Musketeers scored first in the second, but a free throw from freshman Yasmin Ott sparked an 8-0 run to pull GU within nine 28-19.
- Xavier came back with a traditional three-point play and the squads traded baskets as the quarter wound down as the Blue & Gray trailed 35-23 at the half.
- Midway through the third stanza and looking at a 15-point deficit, Archer hit a layup to begin the 7-0 run spanning four minutes.
- The Musketeers hit one at the buzzer to make it 46-36 at the end of the period as GU searched for the comeback.
- Archer would continue to battle down low for the Hoyas, but Xavier always had an answer.
- The comeback would never come as Georgetown eventually fell 58-48.
Of Note
- Archer had a career-high 23 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds as GU's lone double-digit scorer.
- The Blue & Gray shot 42.6 percent (20-47) and allowed just 37.9 percent (22-58) shooting by the Musketeers.
- Georgetown outrebounded Xavier 36-34, but had 21 turnovers to XU's 14.
- The Hoyas tied or outscored the Musketeers in every quarter but the first where XU outscored Georgetown 23-11 which was the difference in the game.
Up Next
- The Hoyas will await the result of the Butler/DePaul game to find out their BIG EAST Tournament seed. A Butler win would make the Hoyas the 11th seed and a Butler loss would put GU at the tenth seed. Tournament play will begin on March 5 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.
