WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team battled but came up short 60-52 to the Seton Hall University Pirates on Monday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-9 both overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates move to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Head Coach James Howard
- "Our young ladies are working hard out there defensively trying to execute it, but when come down the stretch against veteran teams that have players that are going to make a play, it's tough. When they went zone, we had some looks but we didn't knock it down and they came down and their key kids hit some big shots to take the lead and that's the difference. We have to grow up, we have to knock down our looks. Our free throws, our layups, you have to do that against an NCAA Tournament-caliber team."
How it Happened
- The first quarter was a defensive battle as neither team could gain a true advantage.
- A put back from sophomore Graceann Bennett and a free throw by freshman Yasmin Ott gave GU the three-point lead late in the first, but Seton Hall scored four late points to make it 8-7 in favor of the Pirates at the end of the first.
- Junior Shanniah Wright took over early in the second scoring the first bucket of the game as well as connecting on a pair of layups to help tie the game at 15.
- Seton Hall answered with a quick 4-0 run, but Bennett would battle down low with a pair of layups to knot it at 19.
- Over the final three minutes of the half, the Hoyas would look sharp on both ends as three players combined for a 6-0 run to put the Blue & Gray ahead 25-22 going into the break.
- Graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris had the hot hand in the third quarter as the lead continued to swing back-and-forth.
- A late triple from freshman Kelsey Ransom would give GU the lead 36-34 entering the final stanza.
- Ransom began the fourth with another from beyond the arc as the Blue & Gray clung to a small lead.
- Seton Hall came back to move ahead 43-39, but Georgetown continued to slow the momentum.
- Late in the game, GU couldn't find the run it needed as the effort was not enough and the Hoyas eventually fell 60-52.
Of Note
- The Hoyas were dominant in the paint as Bennett led the way with her fourth-career double-double tallying a career-best 15 points and 14 rebounds.
- Archer managed a career-best 18 boards to go along with five points and Ransom rounded it out with 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks.
- The Blue & Gray shot 34.9 percent (22-63) and allowed just 33.8 percent (23-68) shooting by the Pirates.
- Georgetown outrebounded SHU 55-32, but had 21 turnovers while forcing six for Seton Hall.
