No. 3/2 Georgetown Blanks St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The No. 3/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the St. John's University Red Storm 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-0-1 on the season and the same in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Red Storm drops to 4-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This wasn't the prettiest performance but it was a professional three points in a critical game. We still need to grow into ourselves and we're not close to where we'd like to get. We haven't put together a proper performance this season, but this is the challenge that every team in the country has trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible."
How it Happened
  • St. John's had some possession early before the Hoyas settled the game.
  • Just 10 minutes in, a long shot was easily collected by Georgetown keeper Giannis Nikopolidis.
  • The Blue & Gray threatened in the 26th minute, but a shot from sophomore Dante Polvara was saved and the Red Storm defense cleared the ball.
  • In the 30th minute, the Hoyas got on the board as junior Zach Riviere sent a ball in for senior Derek Dodson. His shot was blocked but the rebound went straight to freshman Chris Hegardt who sent it right back in to put the Blue & Gray on top 1-0.
  • Right before the break, another ball went into the box but Nikopolidis managed to fall on it to keep GU up by one at the half.
  • The game began to get physical in the second half and Georgetown pushed for the second goal.
  • Shots from senior Jacob Montes and Dodson were both saved by keeper Jan Hoffelner.
  • Late in the contest, St. John's searched for the equalizer that would never come as the Blue & Gray held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot St. John's 11-4 with five on goal to the Red Storm's three.
  • The Hoyas were awarded two corner kicks to SJU's one in the game.
  • Nikopolidis took the win in the net managing three saves on the afternoon, while Hoffelner and Luka Gavran combined for four saves in the game.
