WASHINGTON – The No. 3/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team used three second-half goals to comeback from a two-score deficit to pick up the 3-2 overtime victory over the Villanova University Wildcats Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the crucial win, the Hoyas improve to 4-0-1 on the season and the same in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Wildcats drop to 1-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in league play.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Every team that's going to win something needs a game like that where you get put to a test. Losing the goal early in the second half, it was interesting to see how our guys would respond to that and it was good to see this team's character emerge. This was a character-building win versus a character-building loss so we're happy about that."
How it Happened
- Georgetown dominated possession early, but could not generate any chances.
- In the 27th minute, a free kick was sent in and the ball bounced around before it squirted out to Lyam Mackinnon at the top of the box. He fired low to the right corner to make it 1-0.
- The Hoya chances would be few for the remainder of the period as GU went into the break trailing 1-0.
- Early in the second half, Villanova struck again as a Hoya was dispossessed in front of the net and Mackinnon jumped on it sending it in to put the 'Cats on top 2-0.
- The flow of the game changed as the Hoyas fought to get back in it.
- The Blue & Gray began to look dangerous, and finally got through in the 57th minute. Senior Derek Dodson fought through three defenders on the left side to shoot to the far post and past keeper Carson Williams to put the Hoyas on the board.
- The Georgetown offense was buzzing and was gifted the equalizer in the 81st minute as a poor clearance was hit back into the net for the own goal to tie the game and send it into overtime.
- In the 98th minute, the Blue & Gray would get the golden goal cleaning up in front of the net.
- Senior Jacob Montes took the ball all the way to the endline and got the angle to fire from close range which was stopped by Williams. The rebound came back and Montes fired again as Williams dove to save it. That ball would ricochet back to senior Paul Rothrock who buried it in the back of the net to give the Hoyas the 3-2 victory.
