Georgetown Comeback Not Enough Against No. 12/11 Tigers

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team came back and even took the lead late, but could not hold on falling 17-14 to the No. 12/11 Towson University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 1-3 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 5-2 overall.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "I'm really proud of the way we fought back, but we had too many inconsistent moments. Against good teams it takes so much energy to make that comeback and it's draining and difficult to sustain. We need to do better at the little things so we don't put ourselves in the position to need that energy for a comeback."
How it Happened
  • Towson got on the board first but Georgetown answered right back as freshman Kylie Hazen came around the left side and fired.
  • The Tigers came with a 4-0 run before an unassisted tally from graduate student Michaela Bruno made it 5-2.
  • Towson goals sandwiched a score from sophomore Lily Tardif right down the middle from graduate student Natalia Lynch.
  • That would make it 7-3 as Georgetown trailed at the half.
  • Georgetown opened the second with two quick goals as Hazen and junior Annabelle Albert both found the back of the net.
  • The Tigers answered back and the squads traded goals before an unassisted score from Albert on the left side at 19:11 sparked a 5-0 run.
  • Albert's free position goal at 13:50 put GU on top 11-10 as she had three scores in the run.
  • Towson stopped the scoring but graduate student Liza Liotta answered with one from freshman Katie Goldsmith at 11:13.
  • With GU looking at a one-goal lead, Towson staged a 5-0 run of its own to regain the advantage.
  • Bruno tallied back-to-back goals in the final minutes, but TU found the back of the net one last time making the final 17-14.
Of Note
  • Albert led the way with four goals, while Bruno added three goals and an assist.
  • Lynch also managed two goals, two assists and four draw controls in the contest.
  • The four draw controls gave Lynch 223 for her career, tying her as the program leader with Gloria Lozano who played on the Hilltop from 2001-04.
  • GU was outshot by Towson 38-34 but committed 19 turnovers while forcing 16 by the Tigers.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven tallied nine saves, while Carly Merlo made 11 stops.
  • It marked GU's second contest against a ranked opponent this season.
