Georgetown Score Seven Against Wildcats, Vicari Hits Hat Trick

WASHINGTON – The No.12 Georgetown University women's soccer team showcased its attacking ability, putting a season-high seven goals past Villanova University on a wet Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The highlight of GU's offensive output was sophomore Gia Vicari's first-half hat trick, increasing her season goal tally to nine. The win pushes the Hoyas to 9-0-1, 7-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Wildcats drop to 2-8-3, and 1-5-2  in conference action.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"It was a complete performance from the girls today. To play at home, on Shaw, on the grass, they were super excited to be on national television. When you throw in the emotion of senior day––and we know we have to keep winning if we want to lock down a BIG EAST tournament berth and, hopefully, a divisional crown. We came out with a great energy and got on top of VIllanova so quickly. I felt our play was very good, we created some very good chances and scored some very good goals. We defended with a great intensity and I was able to get pretty much everyone on the field, which was fantastic to give some kids a break––also a chance to reward some kids and give them a chance to play some decent minutes. We couldn't have had a better day."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Jenna Menta long throw would give Georgetown an early lead over the Wildcats, with sophomore Gia Vicari cushioning the ball down, striking the ball with her left foot, and finding the back of the net.
  • Two minutes later, Menta surged down the left side of VU's defense, carrying the ball to the endline before dispatching a cut-back pass for Vicari, but her shot fell just wide of the near post.
  • With 25 minutes to play in the first half, graduate student Kaitlyn Parcell attacked the Villanova penalty area, sending a pass to the feet of Vicari, whose one-touch pass set up senior Grace Nguyen for the Blue & Gray's second goal.
  • At 20:54, Menta cut inside from the left-side of the Villanova box, unleashing a shot that struck off 'Nova's near post but Vicari was positioned in the right place to convert the rebound to give the Hoyas a 3-0 advantage.
  • A quick transition off of a VU turnover allowed Vicari to once again attack the Wildcat goal; one-on-one with freshman Maria Thomas, Vicari's composure allowed her to slip the ball past Thomas and earn herself a first-half hat trick.
  • Graduate student Daisy Cleverley would add a fifth to the scoresheet off of freshman Tatum Lenain's pass, giving GU a 5-0 advantage with 8:35 to play.
  • Georgetown's attacking dominance would see them head into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead.
  • GU's sixth goal would come off of a Boo Jackson cross; within nine minutes of the restart, the junior forward drove past 'Nova's right back and served a cross onto the foot of fellow junior Maya Fernandez-Powell, who side-footed the ball past the Villanova keeper.
  • A seventh goal was added at 18:58 when Menta, after using her pace to beat the VU defender to the byline, dispatched a low, driven cross to Fernandez-Powell who made no mistake from 12-yards out.
  • Georgetown's clinical attack and solid defense proved too much for the Wildcats, as the Hoyas left Shaw Field with a 7-0 home victory.

OF NOTE
  • GU out-shot Villanova 23-0, with 13 of its shots finding the target.
  • The Hoyas earned ten corners and only conceded three to 'Nova.
  • Vicari's hat trick was her first for the Hoyas and increases her season tally to nine goals.
  • This was Georgetown's highest-scoring match of the season, with their second-most goals coming in 4-0 home wins against George Washington and Seton Hall.
  • Fernandez-Powell's brace were her first two goals of the season and her GU career.
