Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5/1 Hoyas Play to Scoreless Tie at No. 14/NR Providence

WASHINGTON – The No. 5/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team came away with a scoreless double overtime time against the Providence College Friars Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Chapey Field in Providence, R.I. The Hoyas are now 2-0-1 on the season and the same in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Friars sit at 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
"Providence deserves a lot of credit today, I thought they were the better team for the first 90 minutes and played the game how they wanted it played. In the overtimes we got a better grip on the game with Dodson and Montes' chances, a few inches the other way and we're walking out of here happy. Going to Providence and getting a tie isn't the worst thing in the world and it sets up an exciting rematch down the road which will probably be important. Our guys are disappointed to not get the win, but probably more disappointed they weren't better until overtime."

How it Happened
  • The first chance of the game went to the Hoyas when a left-footed shot from junior Zach Riviere was saved by keeper Rimi Olatunji.
  • As the minutes ticked down, the Blue & Gray began to gain more possession but it was Providence that would get the next look as a cross went to the far post but the shot was expertly stopped by junior Hoya keeper Giannis Nikopolidis.
  • In the final seconds of the first half, Providence had the ball in the box and bounced it around but the GU defense stood strong as the squads went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • Georgetown held possession early in the second half, but it was Providence that looked more dangerous with a number of shots going high and wide.
  • With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Will Sands got loose on the left side and received the cross with just Olatunji to beat. His shot to the far post rolled just wide as the Blue & Gray searched for the game winner which would not come in regulation.
  • The Hoyas held the advantage in overtime as a takeaway at the top of the box put Dodson onside as he fired from close range but was denied by Olatunji in the 95th minute.
  • Midway through the second overtime, a shot from senior Jacob Montes clanged off of the crossbar as the Blue & Gray controlled possession.
  • The game winner would not come for each side as the content ended in a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of play.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Providence 11-6 with two on goal to the Friars' one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded seven corner kicks to PC's four in the game.
  • Nikopolidis took the draw in the net managing one save on the afternoon
  • The tie snapped an eight-game win streak for the Hoyas dating back to November 13, 2019 in the BIG EAST semifinals.
