Hoyas Down Golden Eagles, 20-10

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team avenged a loss from Friday with a resounding 20-10 victory over the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon in the second of a two-game series at Cooper Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-7 overall and an even 3-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "I thought we responded really well today, our leaders stepped up and pushed everyone on our off day to make sure the team understood the importance of a conference game. We executed against a Marquette team that goes really hard, so I was happy with our effort."
How it Happened
  • The first half went back and forth when the Hoyas scored off of the opening draw on a goal from senior Caroline Frock, but Marquette answered right back.
  • The teams would go one for one until the 14:50 mark when graduate student Michaela Bruno had forced a Marquette turnover and streaked down the right side. She found junior Celia Walsh in the middle of the field on transition and Walsh nailed the goal.
  • Bruno added one of her own diving across the goal to get the score, and freshman Kylie Hazen managed an unassisted tally to cap off a 3-0 run and make it 7-4.
  • Despite late goals from Hazen and senior Natalia Lynch, the Golden Eagles would score three in the final 11 minutes of action as Georgetown went into the half leading 9-7.
  • The Blue & Gray began the second half with a 3-0 run as a trio of freshman scored including Hazen, Katie Goldsmith and Maria Hudson with the first of her career.
  • Following an MU timeout, the Hoyas kept pushing as senior Mary Pagano intercepted a pass and went up the field to Walsh who found junior Ali Diamond next to the cage for the goal.
  • Marquette put two together, but it was graduate student Liza Liotta who sparked an impressive 5-0 run as the Hoyas scored at will late in the game.
  • The Golden Eagles would score on a free position shot, but it was freshman Tessa Brooks with her first-career goal  as well as one from Goldsmith to make the final 20-10.
Of Note
  • Hazen led the way for the Hoyas with five goals, while Bruno added a hat trick as well as one assist.
  • Goldsmith managed three scores and Lynch had two goals and an assist as 11 different Hoyas scored a point.
  • Georgetown outshot Marquette 35-23, and the teams tied on the draw with 16 apiece.
  • The Hoya defense forced 20 turnovers.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven picked up the win managing nine saves on the afternoon.
