Trio of Hoyas Earn BIG EAST Awards

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team had a trio of players honored on Monday when the BIG EAST Conference announced its weekly awards. Junior Giannis Nikopolidis was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, while senior Sean Zawadski earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Honors.  Additionally, sophomore Dante Polvara was tabbed for the Weekly Honor Roll. The Hoyas (7-0-2, 7-0-2 BIG EAST) managed a 1-0 victory over St. John's on Saturday to secure the top overall seed in the BIG EAST Championship and hosting duties for the event.

  • Nikopolidis was credited with one save on Saturday, a stop on a PK attempt from SJU's Matt Forster to pick up the win and the shutout.
  • The junior has only allowed two goals in five games for a 0.31 seasonal goals-against average, ranking him fifth in the nation, and made 15 saves.
  • The St. John's win was his fourth shutout of the season.
  • His 17 career shutouts rank him fifth on Georgetown's all-time list.
  • This is Nikopolidis' second award of the season after being named to the honor roll on March 15, and it is the fifth of his career.

  • Zawadzki helped the Hoya defense hold St. John's to just three shots, including one on goal, in the 1-0 victory on Saturday that solidified Georgetown's top overall seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship.
  • It was his first time on the backline moving from the midfield to replace Rio Hope-Gund who departed for a professional career.
  • The senior captain has started all eight games he has appeared in this season.
  • This is his first weekly award after earning a nod to the honor roll as a junior.
  • Georgetown has earned seven weekly awards this season with Monday concluding the accolades.

  • Polvara scored the lone goal, the game winner, for Georgetown against St. John's.
  • He is leading the Hoyas in scoring with seven goals, including two game winners, and two assists for 16 points on the season.
  • This marks Polvara's second nod to the honor roll and the eight for the Blue & Gray this season.

  • The Hoyas will face the second seed from the Midwest Division in Creighton on Thursday in the BIG EAST semifinal at Shaw Field at noon. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Hoya alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action.
