Georgetown Falls in BIG EAST Final

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team snapped a 27-game unbeaten streak falling 2-1 to the Seton Hall University Pirates in the finals of the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field.  With the loss, the Hoyas move to 8-1-2 on the season, while Seton Hall improves to 9-1-3.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Congratulations to Seton Hall, it was a really good game and we played well for long stretches. Seton Hall had some guys make plays in key moments, and their goalkeeper saving the penalty was probably the moment of the match. It's disappointing, this is the first time our seniors have experienced a loss in the BIG EAST Championship. It's a hard thing to get your head around, but he good news is we should still play in the NCAA Tournament. Playing in an event like this against a team like Seton Hall is great preparation for making a run."
How it Happened
  • Ten minutes into the game, the Hoyas began to test keeper Andreas Nota. A pair of shots from GU including a dangerous toe poke from senior Paul Rothrock sailed high as GU pressed.
  • In the 16th minute, it was Seton Hall that got on the board as the team attacked and Camil Koreichi shot to the far post just past the outreached hand of Giannis Nikopolidis to make it 1-0.
  • In the 34th minute, the Will Sands had a head of steam finding freshman Marlon Tabora Ponce in the box. He battled with the defender and knocked it to Rothrock who took a touch sending it to Zach Riviere at the far post. The junior fired and buried it to equalize.
  • Tabora Ponce had another late look as his shot from the near post required an impressive save from Nota to keep it even going into the break.
  • Hegardt had a good opportunity early in the second as he dribbled through the defense and his shot went just wide of the far post.
  • Seton Hall would move ahead again in the 63rd minute as the ball was sent into the box and CJ Tibbling took a touch before firing past Nikopolidis to give The Hall the 2-1 advantage.
  • The series of the game, however, came in the 68th minute when a Hoya PK was saved by Nota. Georgetown got two chances on the rebound but the first was blocked and the second went just wide of the post.
  • Minutes later, it was sophomore Dante Polvara who made a turn and shot a laser just over the crossbar as the Blue & Gray was knocking on the doorstep.
  • Georgetown would push in the final minutes but could not find the equalizer eventually falling 2-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Seton Hall 17-9 with four on goal to the Pirate's three.
  • The Hoyas took five corners to SHU's three.
  • Nikopolidis took the loss managing one save on the afternoon.
  • The loss snapped a 26-match home unbeaten streak for the Blue & Gray.
  • Nikopolidis, Rothrock and junior Sean Zawadzki were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
