Georgetown Falls in BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team battled, but could not find a way in a 15-13 loss to the University of Connecticut Huskies on Thursday evening in the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP semifinal game at Cooper Field. With the loss, the third-seeded Hoyas conclude the 2021 season with a record of 6-10, while the second-seeded Huskies improve to 12-5 and will face top-seeded Denver on Saturday in the championship game.

Head Coach Ricky Fried
  • "I feel for the seniors and our fifth years. It's always hard to lose, and especially this year which has been challenging for everyone in so many ways. I'm really proud of the way our team stuck together throughout the season and how they fought today. That doesn't take away the hurt right now but it shows how much they care about this game."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown was fired up to begin the game as GU managed back-to-back scores in the first three minutes.
  • UConn answered, but senior Natalia Lynch drove the left side and hit an off balance shot to spark another pair of goals.
  • The Huskies evened the score at four, but Georgetown came back late in the half on goals from senior Mary Pagano and junior Ali Diamond.
  • A UConn tally in the final seconds would give the Blue & Gray the 6-5 advantage at the break.
  • A 3-0 Husky run would begin the second half before Diamond managed her second goal of the game to pull GU within one.
  • UConn would lead by as much as five, but Georgetown didn't give up staging a 4-0 run over a six-minute span.
  • It was the trio of Lynch, Pagano and Diamond who battled through assisting one another and finding the back of the cage to make it 12-11 with 11:32 remaining in the game as the GU sideline was in a frenzy.
  • At 10:04, UConn slowed the momentum and then added another but it would be a battle to the end.
  • Freshman Kylie Hazen took a beautiful feed from graduate student Liza Liotta, and despite a UConn goal, the Hoyas kept it going getting the ensuing draw as senior Caroline Frock managed her first of the game with 2:45 left to play.
  • In the final two minutes, it was a tense match as both squads had possessions but the defense made the stop.
  • With the shot clock winding down, the Huskies tried to kill time as senior defender Mollie Miller caused a turnover with 40 seconds to go. Georgetown's chance would never come as the Hoyas eventually fell 15-13.
Of Note
  • Diamond led the way with the hat trick as well as an assist, while Pagano managed three goals of her own.
  • Lynch added two goals and three assists to go along with a trio of draw controls.
  • Georgetown was outshot 30-27, and had 11 draw controls to UConn's 19.
  • The Hoya defense forced 17 turnovers.
  • In the cage, sophomore Emily Gaven managed seven saves for the game.
