Volleyball Edged by Howard in DC Challenge

Box Score WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17) on the road at crosstown foe Howard on Saturday afternoon in the second match of the DC Challenge over the weekend. The Hoyas drop to 0-2 on the season and close out the opening weekend at George Washington on Sunday.

"Today was a tough match against a seasoned team," Head Coach David Heller said. "It was great to get sparks from the bench. Makana added a double-double for her first match as a Hoya and Giselle nearly had one herself. They helped create some momentum for us in set two. Karis and Kelly also came up big with some serving runs for us. Our blocking wasn't as crisp as we would have liked today, but tomorrow is another day to work on things."

Hoya Highlights
  • Senior transfer Makana Meyer posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs in her first match with the Hoyas after coming to the Hilltop from Cal Berkeley.
  • Freshman Giselle Williams added nine kills and nine digs while freshman Mary Grace Goyena and junior Makayla Serrett both chipped in four kills.
  • As a team, the Hoyas recorded 12 service aces in the match, including three each from Meyer and freshman Karis Park. Williams, senior Jessica Cusi and freshman Lilly Costigan all added a pair as well.
  • Costigan led the Hoyas with 12 assists in three sets of action in her collegiate debut and added four digs.
  • Cusi had eight digs for the Hoyas in the back row with junior Kelly Chen chiming in with six.

How it Happened
  • A tight start to the opening frame turned in Howard's favor and a 15-8 lead. A subsequent 6-1 run from the Hoyas made it a two-point margin at 16-14, but the Bison responded with a 6-0 run to lead 22-14 before closing out the set 25-18.
  • In the second, the Hoyas scored the first six points of the frame and led 7-1 before Howard slowly crept back into contention. The Bison knotted things up at 21-21 but the Blue & Gray would hold off their hosts and claim the frame 25-23.
  • A hotly-contested third stanza saw 12 ties and nine lead changes throughout. Battling back-and-forth, neither side led by more than two points before Howard closed out the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-20.
  • In the final frame, the Bison took a 4-0 lead only to see the Hoyas respond with a 5-1 run to tie things up at 5-5. It was all Howard from there as Georgetown couldn't find a way to put together sustained scoring runs down the stretch and HU won 25-17.

Howard Notes
  • The Bison improve to 2-0 on the season after also defeating George Washington 3-0 in the DC Challenge on Friday.
  • Jennifer Bolden and Bria Woodard led the Bison, and all players, with 14 kills on the day.
  • Taylor Johnson had 17 digs, Amani Patterson added 16 and Kendall Smith had 11.
