Georgetown University Announces Cancellation of Football Season Opener Against Marist

Georgetown University has cancelled the 2021 football season opener scheduled for Saturday, September 4 against Marist. The team had a Covid-related pause during training camp which affected preseason preparations and conditioning.

"We decided out of an abundance of caution to cancel this week's game and turn our focus to preparing for our next game on September 11 at Delaware State," said Lee Reed, the Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.  "I want to acknowledge the excellent work of Coach Sgarlata, our sports performance staff, medical staff and most importantly our student-athletes for making every effort to get us safely prepared. While we felt we were near ready, we concluded that an extra week would be in the best interest of student-athlete health and safety.  We would like to thank Marist for their understanding, and we look forward to opening the 2021 season next Saturday."
