Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1/1 Hoyas Blank No. 7/20 Terps, 1-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the No. 7/20 University of Maryland Terrapins 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 2,211 at Shaw Field. With the victory, the Hoyas stay at a perfect 5-0 and hand the Terps their first loss of the season to sit at 4-1.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Maryland asked a lot of our group today and, in certain times, bent but without breaking. We also were able to generate a good number of chances for ourselves and I thought the guys performed really well against a team that could be in the final four at the end of the year."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring early as John Franks fed a ball to Chris Hegardt. The sophomore placed a perfect ball to the back post for a charging Stefan Stojanovic who headed it into the back of the net.
  • Georgetown controlled the pace for the next few minutes as GU looked to strike again as the Blue & Gray had a flurry of shots.
  • The closest chance was a beautiful strike from sophomore Marlon Tabora that clanged off of the far post.
  • Maryland looked to have the equalizer on a corner late in the period as the first shot was saved but the rebound was shot in. However, the goal was called off due to an offsides Terp as GU went into the break clinging to the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Blue & Gray was active in the opening minutes of the second half as the forwards had the Terp defense on its heels.
  • Georgetown continued to pressure as Zach Riviere and Dante Polvara had chance after chance.
  • In the final five minutes, Maryland pushed forward searching for the equalizer but the defense stood strong as GU held on for the 1-0 decision.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Maryland 21-8 marking GU's fourth 20-shot match of the season.
  • The Blue & Gray had seven shots on goal to the Terps' one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded two corner kicks, while Maryland matched with two as well.
  • Senior goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis picked up the shutout in the net with one save, marking his third of the season.
  • The goal was the second of Stojanovic's career on the Hilltop.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will head out on the road for a quick turnaround to face the Temple University Owls on Tuesday evening in Philaedelphia.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available on GUHoyas.com and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
