WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team got a goal from sophomore
Marlon Tabora in the 90th minute to pick up the 2-1 victory over the Creighton University Bluejays in the BIG EAST opener for both squads at Morrison Stadium Saturday evening in Omaha, Nebraska. In front of the largest men's soccer crowd in the nation this season topping 6,500 fans, the Hoyas battled to the final minute to improve to 6-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST while the Bluejays drop to 1-3-1 for the year and 0-0-1 in league play.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "It was a great game and the atmosphere in Omaha was as good as any you could hope for. Morrison Stadium is a really hard place to get a result so we're happy to come away with two points. It was good for us to see Stefan (Stojanovic) score and Marlon gave us some good minutes in the end. He really did his job. But I actually think the takeaway of the game for us is the way we responded to conceding that late goal. Our response was really fantastic."
How it Happened
- It was Creighton that had the early chance as a shot from the left side was saved by GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis.
- The Hoyas settled down and gained possession with a number of looks including two great chances from Chris Hegardt that were saved by Bluejay keeper Paul Kruse and one from Stefan Stojanovic that went just wide as the Blue & Gray attacked the Creighton defense.
- Late in the half, Creighton had a dangerous chance clang off of the crossbar as the squads went into the break in a scoreless tie.
- The opening goal came in the 49th minute of action as a turnover from Creighton sent the ball to Stojanovic. The junior fired from well outside the box and buried past Kruse to make it 1-0.
- The 'Jays didn't go away quietly as a long shot off of a corner went off of the post for another close call for the Blue & Gray.
- Georgetown continued to push with chances, but Creighton would find the equalizer.
- A 'Jay was taken down in the box with no call made. Minutes later, a similar play happened and the PK was called as Diego Gutierrez went high and hit it to tie the match at one in the 78th minute.
- After both teams battled to get the game winner, it looked as though the game would go into overtime. However, in the 90th minute, a bad pass went to Tabora who dribbled into the box and fed it to classmate John Franks. He fired and it was saved by Kruse but the rebound came back to Tabora who found the back of the net stunning the Bluejays and giving the Hoyas the 2-1 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Creighton 12-10 and the Blue & Gray had seven shots on goal to the Bluejays' four.
- The Hoyas were awarded seven corner kicks, while Creighton matched six.
- Nikopolidis picked up the win in the net with three saves.
- The goal was the first of Tabora's career on the Hilltop.
