No. 1/1 Georgetown Blanks Dartmouth in Nonconference Finale

WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the Dartmouth College Big Green 3-0 at Shaw Field Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-0 on the year and close out nonconference play with a record of 6-0, while the Big Green drops to 0-5-0 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "When the first two shots are goals, that takes a lot of pressure off if you can get the lead early. Dartmouth is a really hard team to play against, there was not a lot of time and space for our guys, it's a hard working disciplined group and they're always dangerous on the counter attack. Getting that cushion was hugely important, and Ethan Koehler made a really big save at the end of the first half to keep it at 2-0. The guys who we needed to get going on the scoresheet all got goals today so we were happy to see that."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board early as sophomore Chris Hegardt hit a restart to the back post finding the head of junior Daniel Wu. The defender sent it across and classmate Dante Polvara got a foot on it to send it in and make it 1-0 in the tenth minute.
  • Just two minutes later, Wu got it started again as he sent a long ball into the path of a sprinting Zach Riviere who took a touch and shot it past Big Green keeper Alex Budnik to make it 2-0.
  • Late in the first, the Big Green had two good chances, but it was graduate student Ethan Koehler who came off of his line to make a save with his face and then make another stop in the final minutes as GU went into the second half leading 2-0.
  • The third goal of a match came off of an impressive combination as senior Zach Riviere tapped it to junior Will Sands on the left side. He served it in to the back post and senior captain Sean Zawadzki got an outstretched foot on it to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.
  • The Hoyas would hold on for the clean sheet and the 3-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Dartmouth 16-9 and the Blue & Gray had five shots on goal to the Big Green's four.
  • The Hoyas were awarded four corner kicks, while Dartmouth matched three.
  • Koehler picked up the shutout and the win in the net with five saves.
