Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2/1 Georgetown Downs Santa Clara 1-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team handed the Santa Clara University Broncos their first loss of the season on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field in a Labor Day showdown. With the victory, the Hoyas stay at a perfect 4-0, while the Broncos falls to 3-1 on the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Santa Clara is a really well organized and coached team, they're super dangerous in transition and on setpieces. To get a shutout against a team like that who is coming in with confidence, is a great thing for us to have. They have not conceded many goals this year, they're hard to score on so I was pleased with our pressure in the second half generating chances. I'm a little disappointed we only got the one, but at the end of the day it was enough."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown controlled the pace early in the game as the Hoyas had looks but could not break through.
  • Santa Clara was only forced to make one save on a shot from Dominic De Almeida.
  • As the game began to go end-to-end, it was graduate student Ethan Koehler who was called upon to make a huge save on a counter from the Broncos.
  • The Blue & Gray defense was solid as the teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
  • The action belonged to Georgetown early in the second half as GU had two shots called off sides bringing the crowd to its feet in protest just 10 minutes into the period.
  • Minutes later, GU was knocking on the door again as a shot from sophomore Chris Hegardt went just wide.
  • The game changed in the 59th minute as a corner kick was sent into the middle of the box. Senior captain Sean Zawadzki hit it toward the goal which was blocked. The ball fell to reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Kieran Sargeant who fired to the far post and buried it making it 1-0.
  • GU kept going as freshman Joe Buck hit the post from 22-yards out and a shot from sophomore Marlon Tabora went just wide.
  • Koehler was forced in a few stops, including an impressive kick save, in the waning minutes and the Blue & Gray held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Santa Clara 20-6, and had five shots on goal to the Broncos' three.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 12 corner kicks to Santa Clara's two in the game.
  • Koehler picked up the shutout in the net with three saves, marking his first of the season.
  • The goal was the second of Sargeant's young career on the Hilltop.
