Georgetown Falls to Creighton in BIG EAST Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 80-70 to the Creighton University Bluejays Friday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. It marked GU's first home contest since December 13. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 6-7 on the season and 1-4 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Creighton (14-4, 9-1) scored the opening bucket, but junior Graceann Bennett answered on the other end. The Bluejays regained the lead, but Bennett continued to work down low scoring six of GU's first eight points.
  • With two minutes remaining in the first stanza, a layup from Bennett would tie the game at 15 apiece. The Jays would score five points down the stretch to lead 20-15 at the end of the first.
  • The Blue & Gray battled early in the second period and a triple from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris cut the lead to two, 22-20, at the 6:50 mark.
  • Creighton answered with an 8-0 run before a layup by senior Shanniah Wright halted the momentum.
  • Wright would cut it to seven late in the half, but a 6-0 Bluejay run made it 41-28 at the break.
  • Creighton would build the lead to as much as 22 midway through the third quarter before a trey from Bolden-Morris and four quick points from sophomore Kelsey Ransom gave the Blue & Gray some life.
  • The Blue & Gray would continue to chip away at the lead cutting it to 12 late in the third and trailing 63-49 at the conclusion of the period.
  • Despite the deficit, the Hoyas battled through the final quarter. The squad used the line to regain some ground and defensive stops turned into points on the other end as the guards went to work.
  • Georgetown's comeback was too little, too late and, even with a quick five points in the final minute of action, it was not enough as GU fell 80-70.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 18 points for the Hoyas as well as a team-best nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals for the all-around game.
  • Bennett added 14 points, and Bolden-Morris and Wright rounded out those in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
  • The Hoyas shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field and allowed 51.7 percent (30-58) shooting by the Jays.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded by Creighton 33-31, and the GU defense forced 19 Bluejay turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will continue its five-game homestand on Sunday as the squad hosts the Providence College Friars at 2 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
All Georgetown women's basketball home games are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. All Georgetown University indoor on-campus intercollegiate athletics events will be played with no fans in attendance for the month of January due to the emergence and rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the Washington, D.C., region, across the country, and globally.
