Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Friars Best Hoyas in Overtime

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell in overtime 66-58 to the Providence College Friars Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. It marked the second contest in a five-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring, but the Friars (9-9, 4-5 BIG EAST) answered quickly with a three of its own.
  • The lead would shift back-and-forth until a small 5-0 PC run gave the Friars the 14-10 advantage.
  • Graduate student Mary Clougherty came down and sank a triple to stop the momentum as GU pulled within one.
  • In the final two minutes of the first period, Providence scored a pair of buckets as Georgetown trailed 18-13 at the end of the stanza.
  • A jumper from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris and a putback by classmate Anita Kelava made the score 18-17 before the Friars answered with the 3-pointer.
  • At the 2:04 mark in the second, PC would build the lead to as much as 10, but Bolden-Morris knocked down a pair from the charity strip to make it 30-22 at the half.
  • Providence clung to the advantage, but late in the third period it was the Blue & Gray making the comeback with a 5-0 run which included four points from sophomore Kelsey Ransom.
  • A free throw from Kelava would put the Hoyas down just four, 38-34, with one quarter to go in regulation.
  • The Friars attempted to pull away as the fourth began, but it was Ransom on her own knocking down the triple and following that up with a traditional three-point play to pull GU within one.
  • Ransom's jumper at 4:38 would give the Hoyas their first lead since the opening minutes of the game as Georgetown battled back.
  • The lead swung back-and-forth until a pair of free throws with 19 seconds to go would put PC up by three.
  • The Hoyas called timeout and set up a play as Ransom found graduate student Kaylin West open on the left wing. West's 3-pointer banked in with three seconds to go to set up overtime with the score tied at 51.
  • Georgetown had the advantage early in the overtime period, but free throws allowed Providence to move ahead and eventually secure the 66-58 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 21 points for the Hoyas as well as a team-best nine rebounds.
  • Bolden-Morris was the other Hoya in double figures with 16 as well as six rebounds.
  • The Hoyas shot 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field and allowed 41.4 percent (24-58) shooting by the Friars.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Providence 36-33, and the GU defense forced 17 Friar turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will continue their five-game homestand on Tuesday as the squad hosts the St. John's University Red Storm at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
