Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall to Xavier in Overtime

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a tough 70-67 overtime decision to the Xavier University Musketeers on Friday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. It marked the fourth contest in a five-game homestand and the fourth in eight days for the Blue & Gray. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 6-10 on the season and 1-7 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas had a big first quarter jumping out to a quick lead thanks to the play of graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris.
  • Sitting on a six-point advantage, a layup from freshman Brianna Scott sparked an 8-0 run midway through the period to make it 18-4.
  • Xavier (7-11, 2-7 BIG EAST) would answer with a late 6-0 run of its own, but GU held the 20-12 advantage at the end of the first.
  • The Musketeers controlled the pace of the second quarter, despite the Blue & Gray regaining the double-digit lead on a layup from sophomore Kelsey Ransom and a triple from Scott.
  • Xavier would cut it to six and then eventually whittle the lead to one, 30-29, just before the break.
  • Free throws made the difference as GU went into the half leading 32-30.
  • As both teams struggled to score early in the second half, a fast-break 3-pointer from Bolden-Morris put Georgetown on top by six.
  • The Musketeers found the answer and took their first lead of the game at the 3:36 mark to go up by one.
  • Despite a late triple from Bolden-Morris in the final minute, Xavier answered at the buzzer to make the score 46-42 in favor of the Blue & Gray going into the final period in regulation.
  • Georgetown clung to a small lead for the entire fourth quarter until Xavier tied the game on a triple with 1:43 left to play.
  • Ransom would take over and hit a bucket as well as a free throw, but another trey on the other end tied it again to send the game into overtime knotted at 58.
  • The Hoyas scored first in overtime, but free throws showed Xavier the way back.
  • The ball would not fall for the Blue & Gray, and the Musketeers managed to take control. A late three from Bolden-Morris was not enough as GU fell 70-67.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris led the way with 21 points, including a career-best six 3-pointers, and eight rebounds.
  • Junior Graceann Bennett had a solid game with a double-double posting 13 points and as many boards to lead the squad.
  • Ransom was the third Hoya in double figures scoring 16 in the game. Scott had a good night with six points and eight rebounds as well as three blocks.
  • The Hoyas shot 37.3 percent (25-67) from the field and allowed 36.9 percent (24-65) shooting by the Musketeers. Georgetown outrebounded Xavier, 47-40, and the GU defense forced 17 Musketeer turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will conclude their five-game homestand on Sunday as the squad hosts the Butler University Bulldogs at 2 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
All Georgetown women's basketball home games are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. All Georgetown University indoor on-campus intercollegiate athletics events will be played with no fans in attendance for the month of January due to the emergence and rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the Washington, D.C., region, across the country, and globally.
